WASHINGTON -- In a Capitol Hill debate about global warming touted by its moderator as a "smackdown" between former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, Gingrich praised Kerry's recently released book about environmentalism, acknowledged that global warming is real, and offered what amounted to an unexpected apology for his party's inaction on curtailing greenhouse gas emissions. "I'm not going to stand up here and defend our failure to lead," said Gingrich, who is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and plans to release a book in the fall burnishing his environmental credentials. "There has to be a green conservatism."
The standing-room-only debate, staged yesterday in an ornate Senate hearing room, offered an indication that even diehard conservatives like Gingrich, who stepped down as speaker in 1998, are abandoning their skepticism on global warming. As recently as two years ago, Gingrich ridiculed the notion that humans are causing the earth to warm, but yesterday he said the evidence was "sufficient."
"We have now passed the tipping point of that argument," he said yesterday. The former Georgia congressman even allowed that he agreed with "about 60 percent" of "This Moment on Earth," a recently published book Kerry co wrote with his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry.

Geez. He’s apologizing for us?
Go away Newt.
Newt supporters, where are you?
Move to France Newt, you gutless wonder.
Very disapointing if true, also link does not work.
Gingrich has bought the propaganda hook line and sinker.
Buh bye Newt.
Kerry wrote a book? Who knew he could put a coherent thought together without sounding like a complete snob?
Hunter and Thompson are still cool, though.
Our party doesn’t need your apology Newt. I guess he wants a piece of the money action that Gore is getting from the global warming bandwagon. I hope he doesn’t think he’s garnering conservative votes with this nonsense.
Well, another one bites the dust. Are there no Conservatives anymore who won’t break their neck trying to kiss the Liberals butts?
Did he ask Johnnie Boy that if we truly are in a “Global Warming mode”, why we had to cancel baseball games because of snow in April?
Hey don't let a "failure to lead" stop ya...
More bad news: Thompson has revealed he has lymphoma.

O.K., we have global warming - that is still debateable. However, are humans causing it or is the source of life on earth causing it - THE SUN !!, Lets get real.
Chicken s*. Newt could make a perfectly good conservative case for cutting carbon (”Hydrocarbons are made by people who hate us. Use American uranium instead!”) without buying into the global warming hokum.
Mr. Newt disappoints again.
Let the shark-jumping begin. Oy, Newt, that was stupid.
John Kerry isn’t 60% right about anything. Newt is done
Newt could have made a global warming concession without pandering to Democrats by sucking up to, of all people, John Kerry. It’s a cheap, transparent attempt at Clintonesque triangulation, and I hope it’s his swan song.
