Del Monte Pet Products Voluntarily Withdraws Specific Product Codes of Pet Treats and Wet Dog Food Products in the United States

» Recalled Products in Canada Click Here

April 6, 2007—As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products is voluntarily recalling select product codes of its pet treat products sold under the Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® brands as well as select dog snack and wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is below.

The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall.

The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity on select product codes of the brands below. This recall removes all Del Monte pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves. In addition, since the beginning of the recall in mid-March, Del Monte has discontinued sourcing product from this plant.

No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall.

Del Monte Pet Products has proactively engaged and fully cooperated with the FDA since the start of its investigation. The adulterated ingredients were used in limited production over the last three months for those items identified by specific product codes. Del Monte Pet Products has not used wheat gluten from this manufacturing facility in China in any other pet products except those described below.

Consumers should discontinue feeding the products with the Product Codes detailed below to their pets.

Del Monte Pet Products are 100% guaranteed and all voluntarily recalled products will be refunded.

Del Monte Pet Products customers can contact our Consumer Hotline at (800) 949-3799 for further information about the recall and for instructions on obtaining a product refund. Consumers can also click on the "Contact Us" button and submit the Contact Us form, including UPC number, product name, Best By Date, and manufacturing code information (located under the Best By date).

Consumers may also write to us at:

Weren’t we just assured yesterday by the FDA there were no more product recalls in the works? Was I imagining that?

The FDA knows of no other pet product companies planning recalls, agency officials told reporters.

“Other than that, I think, you know, the public should feel secure in purchasing pet foods that are not subject to the recall,” Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, told reporters.

Won’t be long till they begin recalling the ‘people food’. If the wheat gluten - melimine is in dog food it is probably used in some of our food too.

The saving grace is that we don’t eat the same food every day.

DelMonte's headline writer should also end its practice of putting apostrophes where they don't belong.

So far, my kids are still clear of the endangered species list. All the more reason why we've been feeding them 100% domestically-produced organic dry foods, and an extra helping of whatever Daddy is fixing for dinner. :-)

Does anyone else have dogs that go bug-f**k loony for canned tuna fish? I had some for breakfast (diet, and all that), and after I went to work, they knocked over the garbage can again to get to the empty tin because they didn't pilfer enough from me. It's like some sort of narcotic to them. I mean, they lose control in a way that's out of character for them when a can of albacore is opened. They can smell it outside - in the corner of the yard - through the dog door - when I'm in the kitchen 200 feet away. I've actually witnessed them lick a can into all four corners of a room, down the hall, and into another room before they give up. LOL They're like addicts.

GLOBALISM!!!!!!!

We can’t expect third world nations to live up to OUR health standards. Why the hell we or the Canadians are importing ANY food stuffs for animals or ourselves from a disease-ridden primitive rathole like Red China aside from GREED is beyond me.

Today dog food, tomorrow human food or pharmaceuticals and drugs.

Wheat Gluten is in everyone

Hopefully ours comes from a different source. The scary thing is that it just shows what can happen when our food is tainted - or poisoned.

Funny, I put my bread machine away a couple of years ago after the 'newness' wore off.

Your supper maybe, lol! Not supposed to put plastic wrap over food in the microwave.

I have been telling my kids for years that plastics are the cause of a lot of allergies and other things. Petrolium is used to make it I believe.

The saving grace is that we don’t eat the same food every day.

Not eating the same food each day would not help. Just take a look at the ingredient list on your foods. Wheat gluten is prevalent in most processed foods, pastries, sweets, on and on. Mostly just listed as gluten.

We could eat different foods each day and still be eating the same gluten each day.

Depends upon your diet. If your meal is porkchops, green beans, salad and perhaps a canned fruit I don’t know that gluten would be in any of that.

Any breads or pastas would be more suspect, and of course, we all eat bread every day.

But a dog eats the exact same kibbles every day.

I am speaking as a mother and homemaker, not an expert.

The mystery to me is: Why we(the USA) as one of the greatest producers of corn and wheat on the planet, why on earth do we need to import wheat gluten from China?
God help us when we start importing our beef, pork and chicken from China.

My Lab-Border Collie does the same over the canned Albacore Tuna but she pins the can with a paw for the serious clean-out, then it’s “can on the ice” time. LOL
