No one on our side, including Rudy, can win without giving social conservatives a reason to believe it's important that he or she wins.

He makes a very good point here.

Frankly there are many vocal so-called Republicans who hate the social conservatives. I don't think they want our votes. That's fine. If they give me one of the top three they won't have to worry. They won't get my vote.

As for national security, any believer in the the sovereignty of God knows that you cannot separate these matters. We can't deny God, celebrate sin, and expect we will have security. I don't care if we have the biggest military on the planet. We will never be stronger than God. Does anyone still want God to bless America? Does anyone still believe that matters?

“Welcome to the 40% GOP, where they have to keep moving left in order to keep up with the Democrats.”

And may they enjoy their permanent minority status.

Giuliani represents a new and changed 21st century GOP.

What kind of GOP is that -- one that doesn't win elections anymore?

Actually:

From his Bio at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies:

Andrew C. McCarthy Director, FDD's Center for Law and Counterterrorism

Andrew C. McCarthy is a former federal prosecutor and a Contributor at National Review Online. From 1993 through 1996, while an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, he led the prosecution against the jihad organization of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, in which a dozen Islamic militants were convicted of conducting a war of urban terrorism against the United States that included the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and a plot to bomb New York City landmarks. Mr. McCarthy also made major contributions to the prosecutions of the bombers of the United States embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the Millennium plot attack Los Angeles International Airport.

Following the September 11 attacks, Mr. McCarthy supervised the U.S. Attorney's Anti-Terrorism Command Post in New York City, coordinating investigative and preventive efforts with numerous federal and state law enforcement and intelligence agencies. From 1999 through 2003, he was the Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District's satellite office, responsible for federal law enforcement in six counties north of New York City.

Mr. McCarthy is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Justice Department's highest honors: the Attorney General's Exceptional Service Award (1996) and Distinguished Service Award (1988). He has served as a Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense, and as an Associate Independent Counsel in the investigation of a former cabinet official. He has also been an Adjunct Professor of Law both at the Fordham University School of Law and at New York Law School.

He writes extensively on a variety of legal, social and political issues for National Review and Commentary, among other publications, as well as providing commentary for various television and radio broadcasts.

“Times change and the religious right needs to move over. Giuliani represents a new and changed 21st century GOP.”

Rudy represents the death of the Republican party. And if he does represent the Republican party then it needs to die. But I believe you are completely off base.

He certainly doesn’t represent the small-l libertarian GOP, either.

The account has already been pulled.... it’s just a DU’er creating a little mayhem by pretending to think occasionally.

Guiliani would have had at least a theoretical chance had he said he personally opposed abortion but supported a women’s right etc etc and left it at that. But when he said he wanted us to pay for it via public financing of abortions he shot himself in the face.

Here are the things fiscal conservatives must swallow in order to have the support of the religious right:

Intelligent design
Internet regulation
Taxpayer funding of religious social services
Flag-Burning amendments
Constitutional abortion ban (not just overturning Roe v Wade)

The only thing we true constitutionalists ask of social conservatives is to help us reduce spending and cut taxes. They have no problem with that, because they do not oppose it. So we must compromise for their support, but they make no compromises for ours.

The religious right will find out in 2008 just how irrelevant they are. There are far more libertarian-minded independents and crossover Democrats out there than there are fundamentalists Christians, as Republicans like Arnold Schwartzenagger and Arlen Specter well know.

Once a Republican wins the national priimary without the religious right, the iron grip will be released and we can reposition this party for a majority again.

“No one on our side, including Rudy, can win without giving social conservatives a reason to believe it’s important that he or she wins. Period. They are the thrum that makes this thing go. They’ll be steadfast if your disagreements with them are few, principled and coherent; but you can never suggest to them that their issues — which are ingrained to their core — should be subordinated for the sake of something as comparatively trivial as party unity”

Exactly!! Maybe those who have been trying to push Rudy on us will begin to understand the obstacles they face! I, for one, demand a candidate of high moral standing! He doesn’t have to be perfect, but he needs to understand right from wrong!! And abortion is just plain wrong!!! And Rudy Giulianni doesn’t understand that!

It’s important to understand that the case being made that Rudy is somehow strong on the war on terror is an illlusion. Rudy is a liberal who supports open borders and sanctuary cities. As such, a Rudy administration would facilitate future attacks on American soil by its policies.

Rudy is a bad candidate regardless of what measure is used to evaluated his candidacy.
