I received two alerts regarding treats for dogs. One is for the wheat gluten problem which is now affecting dry food items. The other is a completely different issue where salmonella is found in dog chews. Will post the email alerts with names of items being recalled.
Recall -- Firm Press Release
Contact: Consumer Inquiries FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Red Bay, Alabama, April 5, 2007 -- As a precautionary measure, Sunshine Mills, Inc. ("Sunshine"), a branded and private-label pet food manufacturer based in Red Bay, Alabama, is voluntarily recalling a portion of its branded dog biscuits made at its Red Bay, Alabama biscuit plant during part of March 2007. These brands include: Nurture Chicken & Rice, Nurture Lamb & Rice, Pet Life Large, Pet Life Extra Large, Pet Life Large Variety, Pet Life Large Peanut Butter, Lassie Lamb and Rice, and Pet Life People Pleasers Dog Treats. Private label biscuits for six of Sunshine's customers were also affected. A complete list of affected biscuit brands, sizes, and codes is available below or at our website, www.sunshinemills.com. Sunshine's other biscuit brands and products that include small and medium sized biscuits were not affected. It is also important to note that dry dog and cat food and soft and chewy treats for dogs or cats manufactured by Sunshine are not affected and not included in this recall. The company is taking this voluntary action of recalling the dog biscuits listed below after learning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Sunshine from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall. The recalled dog biscuits are marketed nationwide by many pet food retailers including the mass channel, traditional grocery, and pet specialty stores. No dog illnesses or deaths have been reported to date in connection with these dog biscuits. The recalled dog biscuits contain one percent or less by weight of wheat gluten. Consumers should immediately stop feeding their dog the dog biscuits with the specified date codes and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their dog. Sunshine's products are 100% guaranteed. Consumers may receive the full replacement value of the recalled dog biscuits by returning them to the place of purchase or consumers may contact Sunshine's customer service number at (800) 705-2111 for further information about the recall and for other instructions on obtaining a product refund. The safety and well-being of pets are Sunshine's utmost concern. We deeply regret this unforeseen situation. The following products are being recalled:

FDA Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Inquiries: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today warned consumers not to use American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chews and Dog Chews manufactured and distributed by T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, WA, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination, in people, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Consumers who have the pet treats manufactured or distributed by T.W. Enterprises listed below should not feed them to their pets, but instead dispose of them in a safe manner (e.g., in a securely covered trash receptacle). Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling these pet treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. The products covered by this alert include all sizes and lots of: American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chew and Dog Chew (made from all American beef pizzle) Following is a list of the affected products: FDA collected samples of packages of three different sizes of bull pizzle (beef) dog chews manufactured by T.W. Enterprises and, after analysis, found Salmonella in one of them. FDA is including in its alert all sizes and all lots of bull pizzle chews manufactured by T. W. Enterprises because pizzles used in manufacturing the chews are processed at the same time, cut into chews of the desired sizes, and then packaged for sale. Differently sized chews are thus obtained from the same batch or lot of pizzles and manufactured under conditions that facilitate cross-contamination within batches or lots. It is impossible to differentiate chews manufactured by T. W. Enterprises by lot or batch numbers or dates of manufacture because packages of the firms chews are not coded with batch or lot numbers, and do not specify the dates of manufacture or bear expiration dates. FDA is actively investigating this matter to determine the source of this problem, and will issue future updates as appropriate. #### FDA's Recalls, Market Withdrawals and Safety Alerts Page: ___________________________________________________ Thanks for subscribing to the FDA Recalls list.

FDA Issues Health Hazard Alert for Pet Chews Due to Contamination with Salmonella
A bull pizzle is its penis? They make dog chews out of those??
It definitely is getting ridiculous! I checked the dog biscuits I bought at Dollar General and they’re among the one’s affected by the Sunshine recall. Thankfully I rarely give out treats since one of the dogs has gotten way too fat and I hate giving the other two treats and excluding fatso.
My ex-husband bought two boxes of Milk Bone biscuits yesterday and they aren’t listed...yet. So far our dry dog and cat food hasn’t been on the list. Purina Beneful (dogs) and Purina One (cat) seem to be okay.
I guess so, at least that's what wiki and Merriam's both say. Hmmm, I hadn't fully read the email alert about the chews which the FDA sent me. I decided to go ahead and include it even though it's not a part of the big recall of wheat gluten since it does potentially affect people.
Wikipedia:
Bull pizzles are almost exclusively used/produced today as chewing treats for dogs.[citation needed] The pizzles of bulls are cleaned, stretched, twisted and then dried at a very high heat. The result is a very hard, 80-100 cm long brown stick, which is then sawed into pieces appropriate for the size of the dog, usually 10-20 cm (this process also makes its anatomical origin rather unrecognizable).
The fully digestible bull pizzles are excellent chewing toys. Since they consist mostly of proteins, they can usually be ignored for the daily calorie intake of the dog.[citation needed] As is the case for most chewing toys, the dog will clean its teeth by itself during the lengthy chewing process. However, most humans find the smell of a half-chewed bull pizzle rather unpleasant,[citation needed] which is probably the reason why synthetic digestible chewing toys have become increasingly popular and displaced the dried bull pizzle into a niche for dog owners who prefer more natural or organic food for their dogs.[citation needed]
Both my dogs are eating Beneful for now, they were on Pedigree but my oldest started getting sick last weekend, after eating some Pedigree. I called the vet, they checked her out and said it was not related to the recalls, she always had a sensitive stomach. They think she may have eaten something outside that made her ill.
Do you want to ping your list since the gluten problem is moving into dog biscuits?
I did not know that either. But I do know that bull weiners make a nice pool cue. Pizzle that is.
Get your treats from Betterpets.com. They don’t have any of that crap in them.
They are a new company that is a spin off of Bio-Serv.com. All of the products are tested and certified.. All are used in the high end research field. Great stuff.. Try the Bacon softies. Great treat for dogs.... I have three that will chew your arm off for them.
It was time for me to buy another bag of dog-food and I decided I was going to look around for something different for my dogs. This recall business has me a little worried about any dog-food out there. I switched to Natural Balance-Vegetarian Formula dry. My vet reviewed the information I was able to get on-line and thought this would be a good food for my 2 dobes. They really like it so far and the best thing is no wheat products at all.
Thanks.

Thanks for posting and keeping FR updated.
My little Pom is eating organic dog food for the time being. Fortunately (since it’s expensive), I can get at least two meals for her per can.
Unpleasant thought for the day!
This is getting really scary, too late for me, with my little baby gone. Can click on my name and see my baby.
Will have to ask son if he fed any of this too his dog, who died yesterday a week after mine.
Ran into a friend yesterday, her dog died 3 weeks ago.
Will pass along info to other though, thank you for staying on top of this.
Apparently so...
