:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Ahmadinejad Vows News Soon on Atomic Work
-Full Story-

Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

Four U.S. Army Soldiers Killed, Senior al-Qaeda Leader Captured

By Melinda L. Larson
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 8, 2007 – Four Task Force Lightning soldiers were killed and one wounded Saturday as a result of an explosion near their vehicle in Iraq’s Diyala Province, defense officials said.

In other news, coalition forces captured a senior al-Qaeda leader and two others during raid Sunday morning in Baghdad.

Coalition forces identified the man as the gatekeeper to the al-Qaeda emir of Baghdad. He has alleged ties to several senior al-Qaeda members and is reportedly linked to a number of mass casualty, vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attacks in the Baghdad area.

He was detained along with another known al-Qaeda VBIED cell leader and one other suspect.

“This is a significant step in our efforts to disrupt the VBIED network and their devastating attacks against the Iraqi people,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.

Meanwhile, soldiers from the Iraqi Army and coalition forces from Multinational Division Center South and Multinational Division Baghdad entered their third day of fighting today against illegally-armed militia in Diwanuyah.

Operation Black Eagle netted 39 militia members and large caches of weapons including several explosively formed projectiles and IED-making factories, according to military officials.

“So far we have achieved great success fighting the terrorists,” said Maj. Gen. Oothman Faroudm, commander of the 8th Iraqi Army Division, which is leading the assault. “We have freed the people of Diwaniyah from the murder and intimidation that has plagued the city 24 hours a day, seven days a week for months.”

On Saturday, paratroopers from Troop A, 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, detained three known insurgents south of Baghdad, according to military officials.

The coalition forces discovered the suspects while performing a reconnaissance of an area north of Mahmudiyah. According to military officials, two of the detainees were positively identified as individuals involved in the shooting of two paratroopers April 3 that killed one and wounded the other.

The third detainee is linked with a known IED production cell near Hawr Rajab, Iraq. One AK-47 with an empty bandolier was also confiscated.

Suicide Bomber Attacks Coalition Patrol, Two Taliban Killed in Airstrike

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 8, 2007 – A suicide bomber attacked a coalition patrol southeast of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, today, and two Taliban fighters were killed in an airstrike, military officials reported.
One coalition soldier sustained minor injuries and returned to duty, and one coalition vehicle was damaged.

“The enemies of Afghanistan continue to fight against the peace and security that the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan works to maintain,” said Army Maj. Eric Zenk, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division spokesman.

Elsewhere, defense officials reported five Afghan Security Guards were wounded and another two were killed during a four-hour firefight with Taliban fighters near the Pakistan border in Paktika Province today.

Meanwhile, a coalition checkpoint in the village of Kakaheyl, Bermel District, received rocket propelled grenade and mortar fire from five Taliban fighters. Military officials reported coalition and Afghan Security Guard forces returned mortar fire and coordinated a coalition air strike on the enemy position.

Coalition aircraft dropped two precision-guided munitions on the enemy position, killing two Taliban fighters and wounding three.

The wounded Afghan Security Guards were evacuated to a nearby treatment facility and are listed in stable condition, according to military officials.

“Afghan Security Guards provide a vital service for all Afghan civilians,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force-82 spokesman. “They strive to bring safety and security to their area by protecting the populace from terrorist acts committed by Taliban fighters.”

Military officials reported there were no injuries to Afghan civilians.

“Taliban Behead Afghan Journalist”

#

“Afghan taken hostage with Italian journalist beheaded: Taliban”
by Nasrat Shoaib 45 minutes ago

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AFP) - Taliban militants on Sunday beheaded an Afghan reporter kidnapped last month with an Italian journalist, after the government refused to negotiate his release, a Taliban spokesman said.

“We killed Ajmal (Naqshbandi) today at 1505 (1135 GMT) because the government did not respond to our demands,” said Shohaabuddin Atal, spokesman for top Taliban military commander Mullah Dadullah. “He was beheaded.”

“They (the government) did not contact us,” he told AFP.

Atal said the journalist was beheaded in Helmand’s Hazar Joft district and the Taliban leaders would decide whether to return his body to his relatives.

Afghan private news agency Pajhwok reported that a spokesman for the Afghan intelligence services, Saeed Ansari, had confirmed the execution. But there has been no independent verification.”

“Travelling with the Taleban”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The BBC’s David Loyn has had exclusive access to Taleban forces mobilised against the British army in Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan.

There is no army on earth as mobile as the Taleban.

Taleban interview

I remember it as their secret weapon when I travelled with them in the mid-1990s, as they swept aside rival mujahideen to take most of the country.”

~

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “There is one other factor that increases Taleban morale.

Few have any education beyond years spent in the madrassas, the fundamentalist religious schools in Pakistan that have produced an endless supply of Taleban for more than a decade.

But all know the story of Afghanistan’s past victories over the British.

Engraved in their collective folk memory of Afghanistan’s warrior history are tales of the defeat of the British in 1842 and 1880 along with the defeat of the Russians in the 1980s.

The Taleban disappeared to the mountains after their defeat in 2001, and found it hard to recruit.

Five years on they are back, and regrouping against an old enemy.”

Secular Baathist/Islamic extremist divide overcome repeatedly in Iraq
Regime of Terror ^ | 4-8-07 | Mark Eichenlaub

Posted on 04/08/2007 12:59:05 PM PDT by ikez78

For a regime long said to be sharply opposed to radical Islamic groups the secular Baath Party that formerly ruled Iraq has seen a conspicuously large number of its members caught in close collaboration with al Qaeda and other Islamic groups in post-invasion Iraq.

A recent arrest in Mosul identified a former Saddam Fedayeen leader as an insurgent leader responsible for al Qaeda/foreign fighter camps in Syria.

On March 23, the Tactical Report, an online Middle East intelligence service, reported that a former Saddam Hussein officer was appointed as an al Qaeda leader to set up attacks on Iraqi oil sites.

In addition to these “new converts” a number of older stories on the same topic were passed along to www.regimeofterror.com.

One story, from the Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat translated by a reader at Powerlineblog notes that one of the late Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s top men, Omar Hadid, was a former personal body guard of Saddam Hussein and had trained with al Qaeda in Afghanistan before fighting against coalition forces in Fallujah and elsewhere. Hadid, according to an al Qaeda biography after his death, also had a relative who was an official for Iraq’s Intelligence Services and worked with Hadid on postwar operations. It should also be noted that, according to Knight-Ridder news services, Hadid’s background included outright conflicts with Saddam Hussein’s regime though he testified to the country’s move away from secular restraints after the first Gulf War.

Iraqi Militant Group “The Arrows of God” Extends Ultimatum”

SNIPPET: “On April 2, 2007, the group Iraqi militant group “The Arrows of God” posted a second video, in which it issued a 10-day extension to its ultimatum to the government of Germany. It had originally issued the ultimatum on March 10, 2007.[1] In the video, German hostage Hannelore Marianne Krause appeals once again to the German government, repeating that she and her son will be killed unless Germany withdraws its forces from Afghanistan. She also appeals to the Austrian government, saying: “I worked at [the office] of the commercial attaché in the Austrian Embassy for many years, and now I am paying [the price]... I will be killed because Austria has troops in Afghanistan.” Finally, she addresses her family, asking them to contact any person or party that can help pressure the German government into complying with the kidnappers’ demands.

At the end of the video, a group member reiterates that Germany has 10 more days to withdraw its troops before the two hostages are killed.

“German intelligence chief pays critical visit to Turkey”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Ernst Uhrlau, the head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) arrived in the capital in the middle of last month to hold a number of secret talks with the head of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (M?T) and the Intelligence chiefs of the police to discuss possible ways to cooperate against terrorism, according to recent information.

Sources say that BND chief Uhrlau’s first contact in Turkey was a key meeting with the M?T head Emre Taner, where the two intelligence chiefs discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the intelligence organizations of the two countries. Uhrlau reportedly expressed his desire to see Turkish support against activities of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda while the Turkish side sought the German intelligence unit’s support about the activities of the terrorist groups Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C). Following his top secret visit to the M?T, Uhrlau later visited the newly appointed Police Chief O?uz Ka?an Köksal, followed by a visit to the Intelligence Unit of the Police Department’s Chief Ramazan Akyürek. Uhrlau and Akyürek also discussed possible ways to enhance cooperation between the intelligence units.”

HOUSTON (AP) _ A licensed vocational nurse has been arrested and accused of starting a fire in her office that killed three people and injured six others.

The March 28 fire spread throughout the fifth floor of a six-story building. Three firefighters were among the injured.

Misty Ann Weaver, 34, was scheduled to make her first court appearance Tuesday, charged with three counts of felony murder and one count of first-degree arson.

Weaver, arrested late Saturday, remained in jail Sunday in lieu of $330,000 bail, said Harris County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. John Martin.

When I first purchased the "Jesus Freaks" books (1 & 2) about religious persecution, I had no clue how soon thereafter and how aggressively the anti-religious anti-conservative left would be inflicting their dogma under the guise of "political correctness." Amazingly (and happily) today I noted many local retail stores were closed in honoring the celebration of Easter for their employees.

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
April 7, 2007

President’s Radio Address

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This week, people around the world celebrate Passover and Easter. These holy days remind us of the presence of a loving God who delivers His people from oppression, and offers a love more powerful than death. We take joy in spending this special time with family and friends, and we give thanks for the many blessings in our lives.

One of our greatest blessings as Americans is that we have brave citizens who step forward to defend us. Every man or woman who wears our Nation’s uniform is a volunteer, a patriot who has made the noble decision to serve a cause larger than self. This weekend, many of our service men and women are celebrating the holidays far from home. They are separated from their families by great distances, but they are always close in our thoughts. And this Passover and Easter, I ask you to keep them in your prayers.

Our men and women in uniform deserve the gratitude of every American. And from their elected leaders, they deserve something more: the funds, resources, and equipment they need to do their jobs.
Sixty-one days have passed since I sent Congress an emergency war spending bill to provide the funds our troops urgently need. But instead of approving that vital funding, Democrats in Congress have spent the past 61 days working to pass legislation that would substitute the judgment of politicians in Washington for the judgment of our generals in the field.

In both the House and Senate, Democratic majorities have passed bills that would impose restrictions on our military commanders, set an arbitrary date for withdrawal from Iraq, and fund domestic spending that has nothing to do with the war. The Democrats who passed these bills know that I will veto either version if it reaches my desk, and they know my veto will be sustained. Yet they continue to pursue the legislation. And now the process is on hold for two weeks, until the full Congress returns to session.

I recognize that Democrats are trying to show their current opposition to the war in Iraq. They see the emergency war spending bill as a chance to make that statement. Yet for our men and women in uniform, this emergency war spending bill is not a political statement, it is a source of critical funding that has a direct impact on their daily lives.

When Congress does not fund our troops on the front lines, our military is forced to make cuts in other areas to cover the shortfall. Military leaders have warned Congress about this problem. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Pete Pace, recently testified that if Congress fails to pass a bill I can sign by mid-April, the Army will be forced to consider cutting back on training, equipment repair, and quality of life initiatives for our Guard and Reserve forces. In a letter to Congress, Army Chief of Staff Pete Schoomaker put it this way: “Without approval of the supplemental funds in April, we will be forced to take increasingly draconian measures which will impact Army readiness and impose hardships on our soldiers and their families.”

If Congress fails to pass a bill I can sign by mid-May, the problems grow even more acute. The Army will be forced to consider slowing or even freezing funding for depots where pivotal equipment is repaired, delaying or curtailing the training of some active duty forces, and delaying the formation of new brigade combat teams. The bottom line is that Congress’s failure to fund our troops will mean that some of our military families could wait longer for their loved ones to return from the front lines. And others could see their loved ones headed back to war sooner than they need to. That is unacceptable to me, and I believe it is unacceptable to the American people.

The full Congress will not be back from spring vacation until the week of April 16th. That means the soonest the House and Senate could get a bill to my desk will be sometime late this month, after the adverse consequences for our troops and their families have already begun. For our troops, the clock is ticking. If the Democrats continue to insist on making a political statement, they should send me their bill as soon as possible. I will veto it, and then Congress can go to work on a good bill that gives our troops the funds they need, without strings and without further delay.

We have our differences in Washington, D.C., but our troops should not be caught in the middle. All who serve in elected office have a solemn responsibility to provide for our men and women in uniform. We need to put partisan politics aside, and do our duty to those who defend us.

Thank you for listening.

END
