Solana warns Czech Republic, Poland against US missile shield

Posted on : Thu, 29 Mar 2007 08:41:01 GMT | Author : DPA

Brussels - European Union foreign policy and security chief Javier Solana on Thursday warned the Czech Republic and Poland against agreeing to host a planned United States anti-missile system. While the EU treaties granted member states sovereignty on security matters, "that sovereignty has to be made compatible with the EU's general interest in security," Solana told the European Parliament in Brussels.

"The EU is not a defence alliance, but it does have an external and security policy and it would be a mistake not to talk about this amongst ourselves in the clearest way possible," he added.

His comments came after the Czech centre-right coalition Wednesday agreed to launch negotiations with the US on hosting a missile shield facility.

The US has proposed establishing missile defence sites in Poland and the neighbouring Czech Republic, angering Russia, whose leaders have warned such a system could spark a Cold War-style arms race.

Solana warned that "any such system can affect our relations with Russia" and called for debating the controversial issue in NATO.

Washington and Prague are expected to complete the talks by the end of the year. Both chambers of the closely-divided Czech parliament must approve the deal.

Poland earlier this week started considering the US request to build part of a missile defence system in the country, but postponed a decision on whether NATO should be involved in the process.

The US insists that the system poses no threat to Russia and is essential for broader European security against a long-range ballistic missile threat from Iran.

Is there a single European leader that has a brain in their head?

Another Communist trying to bully the people and governments of the Czech Republic and Poland.Unfortunately for this Communist, the leaders of both countries have a whole lot of experience in such matters.

Other nations complaining about our missile shield is like the Sherrif bitching to the Police chief about the supply of bullet proof vests being issued to police officers.

Hmmm.. Or is the more appropriate analogy that it is the would be cop-killer doing the bitching? Or is the Sherrif dirty, and attempting to make things easier for the would-be cop killer?

"While the EU treaties granted member states sovereignty on security matters, "that sovereignty has to be made compatible with the EU's general interest in security,""

Two thoughts:
1. So what good is this "sovereignty"?
2. Go stuff it, EU.

IF there is one thing the people of countries like Poland and Chezch republic can recognize, it's communist B.S. like what comes from the EU.

While the EU treaties granted member states sovereignty on security matters, "that sovereignty has to be made compatible with the EU's general interest in security," Solana told the European Parliament in Brussels.

What the.....? Hey, Javier! Attended any good train-bombings lately? What is your "security" policy on fanatical Iranians shooting off nuclear-armed IRBM's at you? Knucklehead! Like you've got a system in place!

That all said, I wish DoD had thought of asking an older, more established NATO ally like Turkey or Greece, or maybe (if they need to be downrange a bit) the Scandinavian countries.

It's not that I care about frosting Vlad the Impaler (hey, Vlad -- murdered any good newswomen lately?), but it would be cool if our guys could manage to give him less to work with on this.

That all said, Vladimir Putin does need to hear the magic words "bite me" more often.

OMG, the Russians are some stupid m....f....rs.
They spent themselves into the ground losing the Cold War with that same mentaility and tactic. lmfao.

The point is that European “socialist bourgeoisie” wants to establish one common state in the future. They really dislike the idea of any American military installations in the territory of the new empire.

From the article: "Solana warned that 'any such system can affect our relations with Russia' and called for debating the controversial issue in NATO."

Of course Solana is concerned. Solana has a fierce puppet master named Putin.

So what good is this "sovereignty"?

Solana is actually running it down, in favor of his having more nod himself over the host countries' security policy. Of course, he isn't bringing anything to the table, so that means he's just being a nuisance and reminding the host countries that some of their own people had misgivings about joining the EU in the first place.

The thought will have begun to form in people's minds, that NATO membership was a good idea, and EU membership maybe a less-good idea, if windbags like Solana are running it.

What a clueless moron!

Solana like many of his ilk has lost his mind...in their frustration at not winning the Cold War.

The only enemy Europe has is the Muslims who they are letting in their nations.

It would seem, all states are sovereign, but some are more sovereign that others.

"that sovereignty has to be made compatible with the EU's general interest in security,"

In other words, you are only permitted the 'sovereignty' the Euro-elite wants you to have, untiul they're paid off by Gazprom.

The whole German government under Schroeder was bought and paid for by Putin. How many other Euro politicians are on the take and/or simply Communists nostalgic for Soviet influence in Europe?
