Milk prices expected to rise 9 percent
Associated Press ^ | March 30, 2007 | GENARO C. ARMAS

Posted on 03/30/2007 6:36:30 AM PDT by ryan71

Dairy economists predict the retail price of milk could rise as much as 30 cents per gallon — a 9 percent jump — by fall. The reasons include rising fuel and feed costs for farmers and increasing demand for milk products around the globe.

Costs have surged for fuel and petroleum-based products and for the corn used to feed dairy cows, a side effect of increases in the production of ethanol.

Don't worry, even though it will be a permanent increase, it is part of the "volatile food and energy" part of the CPI so it doesn't count as inflation.

I was driving down the road earlier this week and a sign on one of the gas stations on my way said, "Stock up on milk! Prices going up April 1!"

Maybe they should switch to other animals besides Cows (and the occasional goat) for milk.
I could go for a nice cold glass of rat milk right about now.

Wonder if the milk industry's profits will rise as much as Exxon's does, when they have a 30 cent per gallon increase in their product?

With oil prices going to near $70/bbl on the rumors of a war with Iran, everything we buy will be going up and everyone's services will also go up because of their escalating overhead. You can thank the US Congress, particulary the Democrats, for banning drilling in coastal waters off Florida and California, and in ANWAR. If Clinton had been anything but Monica's boyfriend, all that oil would be pumping this morning and we wouldn't be paying through the nose for it now.

I'm about to buy a goat.

Sounds like an excellent idea. For some odd reason it seems my husband is the one who picks up milk most of the time. I about choked when I reached for a gallon in the supermarket yesterday. $4.69

Around here the cheapest place to buy milk is Sam's or Wal-greens. It's amost $5 at the supermarket or $3.50 at the commissary. I've heard goat milk is better for you and the goat will cut down on the amount of time mowing the yard!

Dairy farmers are going out of business due to the ethanol created price increase in grain. 22 of 140 farms in my county are up for sale with no buyers. 5-7 will go bankrupt this year.
