11 die as Belarus plane is shot down over Mogadishu Mogadishu: Belarus said yesterday a missile caused a plane crash in Mogadishu that killed 11 of its citizens, while the Somali government said the incident looked more like an accident than an attack by ever bolder insurgents. "The plane was shot down," Transport Ministry spokeswoman Kseniya Perestoronina said in Minsk, adding the large Ilyushin plane, in Somalia to assist struggling African peacekeepers, was hit at a height of 150 metres. If confirmed, it would be the most spectacular strike yet by rebels fighting the Somali government, their Ethiopian military allies and the African Union (AU) force since the start of 2007. Both a local Somali radio and an Islamist website said a missile hit the plane just after takeoff from Mogadishu on Friday afternoon.
Huge haul of explosives in Sinai Cairo: Egyptian authorities found three tonnes of explosives in an underground warehouse in the northern part of the Sinai peninsula, a security source said yesterday. "The TNT explosives were found in a warehouse hidden under agricultural land in the Al Towayel area," the source said, adding that they were hunting those involved in the cache.

BBC had a photo of the plane on Friday. An IL-67 or 76. Looked like our C-141 or C-5.
An aircraft shot down from any altitude is spectacular . . . especially if you're in it.
I wonder who was planning on doing what with the explosives.
Yeah, the word "spectacular" feels wrong to me too. I think it's part of media culture to glorify the crimes of the bad guys.
["An aircraft shot down from any altitude is spectacular . . . especially if you're in it."]
Well, to me, what would be "Spectacular" is something along the lines of, say, shooting down a F-117 stealth fighter.
Oh, and that would be whether you're in the aircraft or not.
You strike me as a juvenile who lives on video games when you aren't blabbering on FR.
Anything shot down, at any altitude, with loss of life is not child's play.
["You strike me as a juvenile who lives on video games when you aren't blabbering on FR...Anything shot down, at any altitude, with loss of life is not child's play."]
I'm sorry if I offended you...I didn't mean to.
Of course, any loss of life is not child's play...I realize that.
Distressing news.
