GOP fundraiser jumps from Romney to Giuliani
St. Petersburg Times ^ | March 22, 2007 | ADAM C. SMITH

In another sign of the intense Florida presidential campaign jockeying, a top Republican fundraiser is jumping ship from the Mitt Romney campaign to Rudy Giuliani's.

Richard Blankenship, a Jacksonville area investment banker and President Bush's former ambassador to the Bahamas, said he resigned from Romney's Florida finance team after becoming convinced Giuliani had broader appeal and said other Romney fundraisers in Florida could do the same.

Blankenship, who describes himself as a fiscal conservative and social moderate, has raised and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars for Republican efforts and frequently loaned his Cessna airplane to Republicans. He called Romney a wonderful person, but said he had concerns about the former Massachusetts governor's shifts to the right on a number of social issues.

"The changes in core beliefs gave rise to some concerns. You have to have an anchor in life," he said of Romney. "Mayor Giuliani has a firm, secure hold on his moral compass and how that effects his platform, rather than change to satisfy special interests in our party. The Republican Party needs to broaden its appeal beyond a few special interests."

Sally Bradshaw, a senior Romney adviser, said Romney "is clearly the true conservative in this race, and it's unfortunate that Blankenship has made a decision to go in another direction. At the end of the day, we hope to have him return to the fold."

Romney needs to show some upward movement in the polls soon or he's going to have to pay for his campaign himself.

April 15.

That's when fundraising filings for the first quarter will be made public for all the candidates. I think some people will be suprised at how well Romney is doing in the "money primary".

For those clearly in the running; my vote rests will Mitt Romney. Sad to see the money jumping. . .

I think the MSM cannot wait for the Repub 'mantle' to be laid on Rudi's head; and when their real work will begin. . .

Blankenship, who describes himself as a fiscal conservative

At least he has the most important characteristic right... anyone who is a social conservative before being a fiscal conservative needs their head checked.

Check out Hillary's warning about jumping.

**...Geffen threw a huge party that raised $US1.3 million for Obama last week. Clinton's campaign was outraged that Obama got in first - though Clinton will raise at least that much at a fundraiser next month - and word around town is that her supporters are being told that there will be no tolerance for spreading the wealth to other Democratic candidates. One insider says people are being warned that ambassadorships go to those who were there from the beginning and didn't waver in their faith....***

No matter which Republican wins the primary, the MSM will work to rip him apart.

Ehrlich To Endorse Giuliani

WASHINGTON - Thursday March 22, 2007 8:13 am

Former Maryland governor Robert Ehrlich is expected Thursday to endorse fellow Republican Rudy Giuliani's candidacy for president.

Ehrlich tells The Washington Post that he believes Giuliani is the strongest candidate. Ehrlich is also expected to say Thursday that he will serve as the regional chairman for Giuliani's campaign.

Ehrlich says he be raising money and giving speeches on Giuliani's behalf. He says he and Giuliani have become friends in recent years and Giuliani campaigned for him in his races for governor.

Check out the numbers at Michael Barone's Blog:

***...Conclusions: This confirms Giuliani's significant rise from the 27-to-30 percent level of November to January to the 35-to-37 percent level of February to March. Also, McCain's fall from 25.5 to 27 percent in November to December to 20 to 23 percent in January to March. Also, note that the percentages for others and undecideds have been declining, roughly in tandem with the move to Giuliani; Romney's numbers have not had a significant change, and neither, it seems, have those of Gingrich, who in any case is not a declared candidate. Yes, there's a market out there for another alternative. But it's not a market that has been expanding....***

So what we have here is a RHINO who first thought Romney was a fake conservative and thus someone he could support. But, after close contact, he decided Romney really was *gasp* a social conservative. Thus he jumps shift to the real RHINO. Meanwhile the media's backup plan for the McCain Mutiny proceeds as they try to prop up a friend of McCains that they know well, someone who favors their key McCain-Feingold act, and someone whom they've proven they can beat as needed, Fred Thompson.
