CSU faculty union OKs statewide strike

A union representing professors, librarians and coaches at Sonoma State and 22 other California State University campuses has voted overwhelmingly to approve a strike, which could occur over several weeks beginning in April.

Because of the size of the CSU system, Travis said, "if we strike, it will be the largest strike in the history of higher education in this country."

New CSU tenure-track faculty start at about $50,000 a year, the average salary for tenure-track is $71,000, and the average for faculty with 20 years of experience is $86,000.

Instructors, who teach 60 percent of CSU classes, earn an average of $58,000 if they are full time. Part-time instructors, if they worked on a full-time basis, would earn $43,000 a year.

It's all about salaries? Bennies aren't mentioned at all, and bennies are usually the budget busters.

Unions in CA typically have the very best, top of the line, benefit packages, at taxpayer expense. Of course. Sabbaticals, lots of days off, etc. And in some places, teachers get subsidized housing in high-income districts.

Guess the unions are now pushing for those evil greenbacks - 2008 elections are coming up.

Well, I have less of a problem if they're just going to goose salaries a bit. Who/what has to sign off on any deal with the union? Ahnold? The state legislature? BTW, if I were the folks in CA, I'd make darn sure bennies aren't part of the issue, one that just isn't being discussed.

Another good reason not to apply to a public college in California.

Hmmm ... how many degrees will be held hostage? Will the students blame the gubermint or the teachers when they have to go an extra year?

Let us hope for a looooooooonnnnnnngggg strike. Without the CSU in there promoting pure communism at the expense of taxpayers a few seekers of higher education might be spared a mis-education.

It would be a huge plus if the entire CSU system simply faded away.

Go on strike, most could probably be replaced by the janitorial staff just fine.

tenure-track

It might be a good time for the state to look at just how necessary the whole concept of tenure is now also. :)

I'm actually surprised at these salaries.....

Thought they'd be much, much higher.

Add in all the benefits -- all of 'em, days/weeks off... and overall salary is rather impressive.

It's higher in other districts -- salary is based on the area and costs of living in that area.

I think the salaries are too damned high for what taxpayers and students get in return, frankly.

At least they speak understandable English, unlike most of the TAs I had to deal with when I went to school.
