Afghan south: 40 talibans killed in engagements with NATO

KANDAHAR (Afghanistan) - Approximately 40 talibans were killed in engagements against the Afghan forces and those of NATO Thursday in the province of Helmand, in the south of Afghanistan, announced the local police force.

“During a joint operation against the talibans who began this morning with Lashkar Gah and Gereshk, approximately 40 talibans were killed”, affirmed in AFP the chief of the provincial police force, Isau Khan.

Lashkar Gah is the capital of the province of Helmand, epicentre of the recent combat between talibans and the Afghan and foreign forces, while Gereshk, more in the south, had been, these last months, briefly occupied on several occasions by the talibans.

By the way, here is some perspective on who NATO is in Afghanistan as of 2007.

Belgium: 290 Troops
Bulgaria: 150
Canada: 2,500
Czech Rep: 67
Denmark: 389
Estonia: 130
France: 1,900
Germany: 2,750
Greece: 171
Hungary: 159
Iceland: 20
Italy: 1,950
Latvia: 40
Lithuania: 115
Luxembourg: 10
Netherlands: 2,137
Norway: 540
Poland: 100
Portugal: 156
Romania: 750
Slovakia: 57
Slovenia: 51
Spain: 800 and getting less
Turkey: 825
United Kingdom: 6,300
United States: 12,000

It is clear who NATO is. US has to beg France and Germany for help and they simply refuse. Most of the contributing nations have offered non-fighting troops. Truck drivers etc.
