An Italian journalist held for two weeks in Afghanistan said after his release Monday that he saw his captors cut off the head of one of the two Afghans kidnapped with him and thought he would be next to die.
In an interview with RAI Tg3 News, Daniele Mastrogiacomo described a harrowing experience. "I saw him be decapitated," he said.
He said the kidnappers threw the Afghan to his knees and suffocated him in the sand as they cut his head off.
"Then they wiped the knife on his clothes. I was shaking. Obviously I thought 'it's my turn now,'" Mastrogiacomo said.
The fate of the other Afghan who had been accompanying the journalist was not immediately known.
In an earlier audio posted on the Web site of his newspaper, La Repubblica, Mastrogiacomo said he slept in 15 different prisons that were "as small as sheep pens." His hands and feet were chained, and he was made to walk for miles in the desert, he said.
Mastrogiacomo said knowledge of the support of his colleagues and countrymen gave him strength.
"I knew that Italy was supporting me and that was the only comfort in the most desperate moments, when I feared I was going to be killed at anytime soon," he said. "This is the most beautiful moment of my life."

Why do they use knives for decapitation? It seems a little labor intensive for the job, when a nice heavy sword or broadax would be easier and quicker. Or is that the idea?

We are totally over-reacting. The cry for love and understanding has never been more real. Obviously these poor decapitators are victims of repeated abuse by Americans. I say we take Rosie out and decapitate her to show them we mean to change our ways immediately.
And if the World Trade Center hadn't unexpectedly jumped in front of those two planes being heroically flown by volunteer pilots, none of this would have ever happened.
If you'd have seen the videos, you'd know that they like to take their time and even like to make the victim help by 'assuming the position'. Sounds like this guy's decapitation was faster than average.
If only Bush would stop trying to humiliating muslims and just get to know these gentle creatures better, this kind of thing would never, ever happen.
I freely admit that I avoid seeing the videos. I saw a man hanged once and don't care to again.
Hey, when you can't the press on your side, you bring the "action" to them. The kidnappers just got a ton of free press and were able to send a message to certain individuals all in one fell swoop (no pun intended).
Those are not human. Their species is not the same as ours. They DNA is not the same. They have a different number of chromosomes. They should never be allowed to enter a civilized country. Those who are here should be expelled.
