Mexican state police arrested in raid[brotherhood of rogue cops]

VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico — Hundreds of Mexican federal police and soldiers surrounded the headquarters of Tabasco's state police and arrested top current and former commanders in a raid apparently linked to an assassination attempt against the state's public safety secretary.

The federal officers disarmed police at the state public safety headquarters at Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco located 410 miles east of Mexico City, and arrested three top state police commanders there, as well as two other former commanders detained elsewhere, said Tabasco state Interior Secretary Humberto Mayans.

The Saturday raid — in which 350 federal police and about 150 soldiers disarmed state police — followed a March 6 shooting attack in which retired Gen. Francisco Fernandez Solis, the new head of state public safety, was wounded and his driver killed.

No charges against the men were immediately announced, but the five detainees were taken to the offices of the Assistant Attorney General for Investigation of Organized Crime in Mexico City for questioning. Mayans said the arrests were related to the ongoing investigation into the attack on Fernandez Solis.

After the raid, state police officers returned to their duties with only nightsticks, while armed federal officers performed patrols.

While investigators had originally said they thought the attack on Fernandez Solis had been carried out by drug traffickers, Saturday's arrests appeared to lend credence to reports the shooting had been the work of a shadowy "brotherhood" of rogue policemen angered by the new security secretary's rigorous approach to combatting the drug trade and other crimes.

Mexico has a long way to go before they climb out of that third world cesspool.

Corruption and cronyism rule politics there which is why an open boarder with Mexico is insane.

A new pinglist:

Plaza de las Tres Culturas
pan-Latin America pinglist.*
This pinglist covers a broad range of topics relating to Latin America: culture, current events, politics, science, history, arts, etc.

Warning: This could be a moderate/high volume pinglist.

Note: This pinglist generally does not cover topics pertaining to Latinos in the USA.

Ping if you see a pertinent thread.

*To get on or off this list, freepmail with the subjects Latin America on or Latin America off . No message is necessary. Freepmail.
There is also a: pan-Africa pinglist; pan-Asia pinglist; and a pan-Europe pinglist.
John 3:16 (New King James Version): "16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
This pinglist can terminate at any time, without notice.

If you have something to type (say) about these pinglist signs: they're too garish, too big, they don't easily come up on your computer, they're so butt ugly that they're burning out your retinas..... or even that you think they look decent, then go here and look AT ALL OF THEM, and vote. A prototype "slimmed down" version has been made for the Latin America pinglist.

Don't wish for all of freeperdom to be angry and not type (say) anything about it. Personally find the signs appropriate (otherwise they'd have other colors, pictures, sizes, etc.), and of the opinion that currently all of the type should stay (after they get established, then the Notes and even the Warning, and potentially even the links to the other pinglists can be removed).

This is crazy. Why does Mexico continue to have these problems? It has a vast terrain, coasts on or near two major oceans, a nice climate, abundant natural resources and hard-working people. Mexico could easily be a superpower if it wanted to. Why do these problems persist there?
