Swedish bishops say yes to gay church weddings
The Local ^ | 16th March 2007 | TT/The Local

The Church of Sweden's leaders have said that they are willing to allow gay people to marry in church on the same basis as heterosexual couples, although bishops are unsure whether to call the unions marriage.

"We are prepared to carry out partnerships for homosexuals that have the force of law," said Bishop Claes-Bertil Ytterberg of the church's Västerås diocese.

Ytterberg said the decision will make the church the first major denomination in the world to allow full gay church marriage in practice. However, the United Church of Canada, the second largest Canadian denomination, already carries out gay marriages.

An official government report proposing changes to marriage laws is to be presented next week. The report is expected to call for all couples, gay or straight, to be given equal marriage rights.

Why don't they just make it official and rename themselves the "Church of Satan."

Lutheran ping needed for this story about the world's largest "Lutheran" church body--one that is, sadly, mostly merely LINO. Den svenska kyrkan is like the ELCA on steroids.

Swedes still go to church?

Only a small percentage. But the church they would have to go to is not even Christian any longer in most places.

There is, thank God, still a faithful remnant of pastors and congregations, and if you seek them out, you can find them.

Now that doesn't sound very tolerant, nor is it wise policy for the Satanists. If they openly praised ol' Beelzebub, it would remove all doubt. No. It's far better to resemble good while doing evil. Shoot, it works for most liberal politicians.

My gosh! What are they thinking? Then again I've pretty much had to stop going to the Presbyterian church wife and I grew up in, were married in, had our three kids baptised in and watched our daughter get married in because of similar situations.

In any case I've posted this link before but it still touches me. A St Lucia service in a church in Gellivare Sweden. Con Amores Luciakonsert

This link WAS working a few minutes ago...it seem sto be bogged down now. If it doesn''t work try Gellivare

look for the "filmtajm" link, click it and the click the "con amore st luciafest" link.

Seems like my links never work.

prisoner6 It wasn't that long ago that services in the Presbyterian church Wife and I belong to weren't all that different. Now they're "shiek" and "trendy" and there's very little for Wife and I.

BTW speaking of Gellivare...>YEARS, maybe a decade< ago when webcams and chat were just starting I made contact with Sofia Jannok who was a Sami folksinger from Gellivare. Over the years I lost track of her but I never had a doubt her music would be VERY popular. Now she seems to be a celebrity in Sweden if not Europe. If I am translating her website properly - I'm probably not...sigh - she might be coming to the US for some sort of affair at the Swedish consulate? Embassy? in DC. If anyone gets the chance and is so inclinded, check out her website... Sofia Jannok

Born in '82...so when I think I was chatting with her and her friends in the mid to late '90s...OMG...well I still REALLY enjoy her singing and philosophy that musi is very spiritual.

Imagine reading this article 15 years ago. You wouldn't believe it or you'd be totally shocked. But the frog is boiled pretty well now. Nothing shocks any more. That is a bad, bad sign.

Another liberal church doomed to slide into extinction. You can tamper with God's laws but His Word remains the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Ever since receiving the Ping request I've been racking my brain trying to come up with some outstanding theologians, preachers, or faithful Bishops in recent centuries in the Church of Sweden. So far...a blank.

The chief contribution that the Church of Sweden has made to Lutheranism are some excellent Pietist hymns, such as "Thy Holy Wings, O Savior" and "Children of the Heav'nly Father".

The hierarchy is in the historic episcopate, but that pearl was cast before swine when retired Bp. Stendahl became a coconsecrator of the sodomite Episcopal Bp. of New Hampshire.

It is a pity that the Lutheran Church in Sweden is going the way of Europe. Apostate.

Another thought. Our Constitution insures "Freedom of Religion". Now, I see the blessings of our Constitution. Our church does not have to toe the government line. We can maintain our Christ-Centered, Gospel-Following beliefs.

Funny you should mention that particular hymn. When I was in high school, I volunteered in our VBS at Lakeview Lutheran Church (ALC) in Madison, WI. My assignment was as a teachers aid to the kindergarten class. That week, we taught them the hymn, "Children of the Heavenly Father" and I got so sick and tired of that hymn that to this day, I shudder when I see it on the bulletin! :-)

My usual disclaimer that all this is not connected with the LCMS (Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod) in which I was born, raised and confirmed, thank God.

And to think that Saturday I went to the Busy Bee bakery and bought a Swedish Flop coffee cake.

Although today the coffee cake's name does seem rather apropos.
