Fred... Thompson is scheduled to visit Capitol Hill in a few weeks, a trip designed to dovetail with efforts by three well-connected Tennessee friends to line up support for drafting him into a GOP campaign that so far has left many core Republican leaders discouraged.
One of those friends, former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, has called for a Thompson candidacy in postings on his political action committee's blog. Meanwhile, Howard Baker, another former Senate majority leader who also served as a White House chief of staff under President Reagan, and Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.) have been recruiting congressional endorsements.
Thompson "is in the process of getting his personal affairs in order so this has a chance of happening," said Wamp, who spoke at length this week with Thompson.
Wamp said that about 40 House members were interested in meeting with Thompson. Frist told supporters Friday that Thompson was interested in hearing their reactions.
"Now is the time for big ideas big, true conservative ideas that rise above the fray," Frist wrote on his website.
Noting that he spoke with Thompson on Thursday night, Frist said, "Fred is listening. He will carefully consider running over the next several weeks."
... the effort coalescing behind Thompson underscores the extent to which leading conservatives are dissatisfied with a GOP race in which former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, a moderate on abortion and gay rights, has become the front-runner in polls.
The leading alternatives to Giuliani have not quelled the disenchantment top conservatives remain wary of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney suffers from his one-time embrace of moderate views on some social issues.

How is Rudy, and how was Romney, "moderate" on social issues? What would it take to be a liberal?
Fred Thompson: Hillary's Worst Nightmare
And here she's all geared up with her smear machine to sink Guilliani, and the conservatives would throw her this curve ball. You just can't trust that wascally "right wing conspiracy."
Do you know if he served in the Vietnam War?
I hope that I can find a local source of those bumper stickers. I really, really hope he runs.

It's the LA Times - written and published by and for liberals. To them the moderate George W. Bush is a radical-right winger, and Rudy's position on social issues is "moderate." They don't like to use the word "liberal."
Can anyone imagine either Fred Thompson or Rudy Giuliani being such a pathetic pussy over this Attorneys non-scandal, like Bush has? Either one would be a vast improvement.

Thompson did not serve in the military. All I know is that he got married in 1960 at the young age of 17 and had three children with his first wife.

Hillary Rotten Clinton's negatives are so high that the prince of freakin' darkness could run against her and win.
Thanks.
He has such a vast store of disgruntled conservatives just waiting to support him. He'd instantly jump to the top of the polls and create a two-way race with Rudy.
I know there are serious reservations about Rudy, but a Thompson/Rudy ticket would be the best of both worlds. Rudy would attract independent fence-sitters who are leery of far right candidates and who are not sold on Hillary.
I like it!
Have there been any polls matching Thompson against either Obama or Hillary? That's where the rubber will meet the road. If he beats both in polls, I will support him. Otherwise not.
It sounds like he's gonna do it! Whoo hoo!
Fred is scheduled to substitute for Paul Harvey for the next 3 weeks, so I don't think he'll announce before then.

If you'd like to be added to the Fred Thompson list, let Howlin or me know.
The only Vietnam vet that matters is John F. Kerry.
Giuliani will win, but give us a President who we can't trust. Thompson will lose with honor and dignity. It's a tough choice.
No southerner can win as a Republican in 2008. I recognize the south is our base, but it's not enough for us to win 270 electoral votes any more. We need a candidate from the west or Midwest who can expand beyond our base.
It's understandable that southern voters who stood by the Republicans in 2006 when every other region went Democrat would want another Presidential candidate who looks and sounds like them. Sadly, it is not the way to actually winning the White House. The rest of the country has had its fill of Bush's variety of leadership.
