LAS VEGAS --From Stardust to just dust. The Las Vegas Strip's first mass-market casino-hotel was imploded early Tuesday in a hail of fireworks to make way for Boyd Gaming Corp.'s $4.4 billion megaresort Echelon.
Hundreds of people partied beneath tents and on makeshift patios before Boyd chairman Bill Boyd's four grandsons pushed a plunger to detonate the former Stardust casino. The blast generated a massive dust cloud that chased the revelers into cars, buses and nearby casinos.

In 1966, Howard Hughes attempted to buy the Stardust for $30.5 million but was thwarted by government officials on the grounds that his acquisition of any more gambling resorts might violate the Sherman Antitrust Act.

I enjoyed eating at the Mexican joint in that casino known as Tres Lobos.
We went there many times when we lived in Las Vegas.....they had a bank of nickle machines that paid more than they took....some fun shows there also.
I guess they have to move on though.

What is it about Las Vagas that captures the imagination? I'm not much of a gambler, and only had a so-so time there in December. But for some reason, ever since, I see the place a lot in my mind.

I went there once and stopped by the blackjack tables. I didn't play but I just bet mentally. In no time at all I lost my mind.
It can be an adult playground provided the vices, especially gambling, can be kept in control. That can spell trouble for some but overall Vegas has ample opportunity for a relaxing yet spirited vacation. The restaurants are great. Some prefer the buffets. The crowds can be overwhelming, especially on weekends. The place keeps growing.
