The only reason I go to the OAH and AHA is to look for jobs, meet old friends, and make deals with publishers.

Well, you've gotta know that when Bill Clinton is described as great because he is less polarizing than Reagan, it sends up a red flag. These historians are all a bunch of acedemia socialists, IMHO.

Since when is "polarizing" a factor of greatness? Winston Churchill was polarizing before and during WWII; Neville Chamberlain was supposedly not polarizing, and he sold out the Czechs through appeasement. These so-called historians haven't got a clue to what the definition of greatness is.

Now, now! We can't claim he didn't "do" anything while in office! All of these events happened on Clinton's watch:

1993- A humanitarian operation in Somalia is transformed into a military strike, where Clinton refuses to authorize the availability of armor for proper support. When the ill-supported operation leads to American casualties, Clinton overrides military requests and refuses to allow a properly outfitted military counter-strike. Within a few months, he withdraws American forces, sending the message that a "bloody nose" is the only thing necessary for the United States to back down.

1995-1996 - Clinton institutes "Citizenship USA" which pressures the US Department of Justice's Immigration and Naturalization Service to naturalize some 1,000,000 new immigrants, even though many had incomplete background checks. This allowed for criminals and terrorists to enter America. Whistleblowers to these activities and the large scale selling of Green Cards, were physically threatened and terminated.

August 20, 1998 - The Clinton Administration demonstrates a perfunctory response toward terrorism after the assault on two U.S. embassies in Africa. On Aug. 7, 1998. The U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, were bombed by terrorists, leaving 258 people dead and more than 5,000 injured. Some 1,000 were permanently blinded by flying glass.

The U.S. Launches cruise missiles, striking an empty terrorism training complex in Afghanistan and destroying a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Khartoum, Sudan. Both targets were claimed to have been financed by Osama bin Laden, but many feel that the ill-planned strike was simply done to deflect legal problems President Clinton was having with Monica Lewinsky.

The Afghanistan training facility attack fails to get Bin Laden because the Clinton Administration gives Pakistani Intelligence prior notice of their intentions. Pakistani Intelligence had long been known to have elements sympathetic to Al Quaida. They proceeded to give Bin Laden warning and he escaped. There was no follow-up and Bin Laden was again buoyed by our meek approach to the growing terrorist menace.

1999 - The Clinton Administration decides to show the Islamic world that America is more than willing to kill European Christians to court their favor. He provokes war on the Serbs, our only historic friend in the European Balkans. Clinton gives the Serbs the choice of either accepting The Ramboouillet Accords... or being destroyed from the air. He supports the Islamist, Al Qaeda allied Kosovo Liberation Army (responsible for running the drug and prostitution trade in Europe). He authorizes the bombing of Serb civilian targets such as bridges, hospitals and heating plants, which leads to the death of over 5,000 Serb civilians. This action sets the stage for creating a radical Islamic base in the "belly" of Europe.

October 12, 2000 - Terrorism strikes and almost sinks the Destroyer USS Cole in Yemen. President Bill Clinton does nothing. Reinforces the perception that the United States lacks the will to either defend itself or battle terrorism in spite of considerable loss of life. There was no follow-up.

After the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, which killed six and injured 1,000; President Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 1995 bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed five US military personnel; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed 19 and injured 200 US military personnel; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 1998 bombing of US embassies in Africa, which killed 224 and injured 5,000; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

After the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 and injured 39 US sailors; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.

Maybe if Clinton had kept his promise, an estimated 3,000 people in New York and Washington, DC that are now dead would be alive today.

Disgusting.

Reagan - brought Russia to its knees after 30 years of cold war. Owned and worked on a ranch. A true man's man.

Clinton - ignored terrorism inside and outside of the country. Besides being a sexual pervert, lied under oath. A true girlie man.

All I know is that when I was in College, my modern American History textbook was skewed severely to the left. Reagan had about 4 paragraphs and it was about rich getting richer and Iran contra. Gorby got all the credit for the fall of the Soviet union. And a tiny little blurb about Klintons impeachment. I let my professor know how I felt about it.

...college and university history professors...

And what would we expect?

They pick a disgraced, fornicating, marxist-hillbilly over Ronald Reagan who made most of us proud that he sat in the oval office....with his pants zipped!

The "historians" have done to the study of history what the lit-crit zombies have done to the study of English. Neither field is currently recognizable as a bona fide discipline.

That is quite an admission for them to rate Carter below Reagan.

Clinton first is bad enough. But,c'mon. We have a nice period of hindsight to review the Carter years. Anyone who ranks him as the second best president of the last twenty five years is lying, period. I don't know why, but, they're lying.

Adam's Mark sounds right.

According to a review of Martin Malia's posthumously-published book History's Locomotives, Malia quotes Mikhail Pokrovsky's dictum that "History is politics projected onto the past."

That's certainly the case for a lot of American historians, especially for those who specialize in American history or who write textbooks.

There are some good historians. I had several when I was working on my B.A. in history @ Texas A&M.

Proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that one can read a million books and still be utterly clueless.

True history will write a different story and these two will be at or near the bottom of the barrel.

What's closer to the truth may be that Clinton didn't do what needed to be done when things desperately needed to be done. There's an attitude that his dalliances with Lewinsky in the oval office, having sex while conducting business and talking on the phone with military staff, etc., was a kind of benign, "no-one-was-killed" attitude that I think Clinton thinks is kind of funny. In fact his total irresponsibility and inaction allowed for the slaughter of hundreds of thousands Tutsi's in the Rwandan genocidal massacre. Tremendous harm was done because of Clinton's continual sexual distractions. His legacy includes showing a generation of youngsters how to have oral sex. Someday this will be the shameful written historical truth about one of if not the worst president we've ever had.

What nonsense. The Bill Clinton who was embroiled in the intern/rape/Paula Jones scandals? Who came across like a clown, with "depends what is means" and "I did not have sex with that woman"? Who made a mockery of the Oval office and of his marriage? Who attacked Serbs, killing over three thousand - mostly women and children, people who had never done any harm to us and who posed no threat to us? ETC.
