Three explosions close to the place of the international conference in Baghdad

BAGHDAD - Three explosions resounded Saturday near the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Baghdad, where is taken place the international conference on Iraq, according to journalists of AFP on the spot.

The blast of the explosions broke several panes of the ministry, where the representatives of 17 countries and international organizations are joined together, to try to put a term at violences.

Iraqi soldiers present on the spot indicated that the explosions were caused by three mortar shells, which reached a building located at 50 meters of the ministry.

No information was available on possible victims of these explosions.

Car bomb kills 5, wounds 10 in eastern Baghdad

Published: 03.10.07, 12:59 / Israel News

A car bomb killed at least five people and wounded 10 others when it exploded near a main road in eastern Baghdad on Saturday, police said.

The remotely-detonated bomb targeted civilians in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City, several miles from the city centre where security was increased as regional and international officials gathered for a conference on Iraq. Police had no further details on the bombing but said they expected the number of casualties to increase as the wounded are taken to local hospitals. (AP)

Explosions rock Baghdad meeting

Two explosions have rocked the Baghdad building where delegates from regional and world powers are meeting to discuss stabilising Iraq.

Witnesses say the blasts sounded like mortars which appeared to land in an area next to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry where the conference is being held.

The talks bring together officials from the United States, Syria and Iran for the first time in years.

The US Deputy Chief of Mission Daniel Speckhard, says the meeting will be a test for any future diplomacy:

"It's going to be important that they show a willingness to play a constructive role in stemming the violence, supporting the Baghdad security plan and supporting reconciliation," Mr Speckhard said.

Meanwhile a car bomb has killed five people and wounded ten others in eastern Baghdad.

Reports say the device was detonated remotely in the Shiite district of Sadr City, several kilometres from where the conference is taking place.
