Mario Cuomo Urges Newt Gingrich to Run in 2008

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a possible candidate for the White House in 2008, is drawing support from an unlikely source – liberal former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo.

Speaking at a political gathering at Cooper Union in New York, Cuomo turned to Gingrich and said: "If I can pause and be erratically independent of my text, I think you would make a great candidate for president on the Republican side. I really do.”

Nevertheless, the two disagreed on virtually everything that was discussed at the gathering, including North Korea, Iran, Iraq, health care and Social Security.

Gingrich, architect of the Republican takeover of Congress in 1994, has been cited as a GOP presidential candidate who could garner strong support among conservatives and "take advantage of the fact that Mayor Giuliani and Senator McCain lean to the left on some social issues,” the New York Sun reports.

I am sure Cuomo would love to see Newt in the race with Newt's low approval ratings. Outside this site, his ratings are not very good and could be because he is a policy wonk more than a campaigner.

Do you think Newt could win? Wasn`t there a money issue in addition to the women problem when he resigned? I`m not sure I remember. Love to see him debate either Hillorat or Obombaa. Said before, the human society would probably rush in and stop it!

But that is not really the point. The Republican nominee is the head of the Republican party and we should always stand for the sanctity of life.

No, I do not think Newt can win by himself but I seriously doubt that is his plan.

actually, Rasmussen polls a Hillary/Newt matchup now. Newt is only down by 7%.

Agreed, I am sure that Cuomo does not have conservative interests in mind when he says this! I think Newt has a lot going for him but the DBM and the scurrilous 'Rats will have an easier time smearing him than most other potential R. candidates, and THAT is why Cuomo wants Newt in the race. I well remember how the DBM turned his reputation and poll standing into dog meat within a very short time.......

President Bush vetoed one bill, just one, in his 6 years in office. Do you know what it was?

Considering Hillary's got roughly 48% of the population that has a negative opinion of her, that's catastrophic.

Newt is the only major player who has even higher negatives then Hillary.

He'd be a great President, but he's a totally unrealistic CANDIDATE for President. And unfortunately, you can't be the former without the latter.
