:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Senior Taliban leader held in Pakistan
-Full Story-

Pakistani security forces have captured a high-ranking Taliban leader in the southwestern city of Quetta, a senior security official and Taliban sources said late Thursday

The capture of Mullah Obaidullah Akhund marked the first Pakistan arrest of a senior leader of the Islamist militia since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001 when thousands of its fighters fled into Pakistan.

The security official and Taliban sources said Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday, hours after a surprise visit to Pakistan by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney.

Not going to Indy

Because of death threats, I don't usually announce where I am going to be beforehand, but since I did announce that I'd be leading a seminar for the JTTF in Indianapolis, I thought I'd let you know that due to a scheduling conflict, I am unable to meet with the members of the Indianapolis Joint Terrorism Task Force. However, I'll be rescheduling a meeting with them in the near future.

"Palestinians swear allegiance to Bin Laden
'We pledge loyalty to Sheikh Osama Bin Laden and we will carry out jihad,' online statement says"

Yaakov Lappin
Published: 03.15.07, 18:28 / Israel News

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A group of Palestinians have sworn allegiance to Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, according to statement posted on a major internet jihad forum last month.

The message appeared on the al-Firdaws forum – a meeting point of jihadis from around the world – and declared: "We believe that God will walk on the path of Sheikh Osama, may God preserve him, and the path of the martyr Abu Musab al-Zarqawi…. We in the jihad in the land of Rabat (Islamic term for Israel – Y.L.) do not belong to any faction, and we declare loyalty to Sheikh Osama, may God preserve him. We pledge to go down the path of the martyrs and fighters in Mesopotamia (Iraq), Chechnya, Afghanistan, and all parts of the world."

Earlier this week, al-Qaeda number two leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, accused Hamas of falling into "the swamp of surrender," following the formation of the Hamas- Fatah unity government."

Yep...me too...and hey when I come back to TM...I come back big! I barely have time to read anything...and just wanted to do a quick check on a few news sites.

I also wonder how long this UN trip has been planned...and what exactly is happening at the UN that would cause him to come here...

OPINION:AllMyJihad has a couple of items he wants to appeal, I believe.

One is the old Argentina bombing case and the other is his peaceful nuclear program and why is everyone picking on it. There may be more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has asked to address the United Nations Security Council to defend Tehran's nuclear programme.

A draft resolution to impose new UN sanctions on Iran for its nuclear programme was sent to the Security Council on Thursday by the United States, France, Britain, China, Russia and Germany.

South African UN Ambassador Dumisani Kumalo, the council president for March, said he had received a letter from his Iranian counterpart, Javad Zarif, requesting the visit when the resolution is being debated.

Mr Kumalo said the Security Council had agreed to hold further discussions on the draft Iran resolution next Wednesday, but no date is set yet for a vote; however this is expected sometime next week.

Iran denies western charges that it plans to produce nuclear weapons..........

The Ultimate Cost of Deals in Iran ... (Russia & Iran: gentlemen's agreements)
The Moscow Times ^ | Friday, March 16, 2007 | Vedomosti

Posted on 03/15/2007 4:58:08 PM PDT by IrishMike

During the seemingly endless arguments with the United States and the West in general over Russia's cooperation in the construction of Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, Moscow has consistently maintained that there is nothing political about the contract. It is sticking with this in portraying current negotiations over payment for the project as a purely economic question.

According to the Federal Atomic Energy Agency, Iran has paid only $50 million of a total $150 million due over the past half year and Russia has not received any payment at all for two months. Tehran says that it will pay in good time and is pushing for fuel deliveries to the reactor to begin this month. Agency head Sergei Kiriyenko has labeled the current disagreement a "technical matter," but there is clear displeasure with Iran.

The current problems don't seem to be the result of financial problems. A source close to the negotiations said Tehran was asking for Moscow's support in the United Nations in discussions about Iran's nuclear enrichment program in exchange for full payment. It is unlikely that Russia will surrender to this pressure, as just $200 million to $250 million of the total price tag for the station is still to be paid. But it is clear that Tehran has already used Russia more than is comfortable for Moscow

.................

But Moscow's position did not change when Islamic radical Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became president in 2005. Russia has had to ignore demands to take stronger steps against Iranian nuclear enrichment and, despite open disputes over territory in the Caspian Sea, has sold Iran military equipment and worked to keep construction at Bushehr free from UN sanctions. Apparently this steadfast support has not been enough for Tehran......

"Iran-Pakistan-Energy Iran ready to make power plants in Pakistan"
Islamabad, March 16, IRNA

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Iran's Ambassador in Pakistan "Mashallah Shokri" on Thursday voiced readiness of Iran to generate electricity in this neighboring country.

In a meeting with Chief Minister of North-West Frontier Province "Akram Khan Durrani" in Pishawar, the Iranian envoy said Iran has gained profound experience in construction of thermal and
hydro-electric power plants and is willing to transfer its know-how to Pakistan. He said Iran's industrial and technological
achievements in power generation like dam construction can be very helpful for Pakistan.

The Iranian ambassador underlined the importance of the projected gas pipeline from Iran to Pakistan for meeting a major part of the country's energy needs.

He referred to the visit to Tehran by a high ranking Pakistani delegation headed by President Perviz Musharraf and also the current month trip of Pakistani Minister of Water and Power "Liaquat Ali Jatoi" to Iran as good signs of great progress in bilateral political and economic cooperation."
