Analysis: Lebanon on the verge of a coup?

Excerpt -

WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Lebanon's charismatic Druze leader Walid Jumblatt was in Washington this week seeking support from the Bush administration for the pro-democracy March 14 Movement and for the beleaguered Lebanese government led by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora.

The leader of the Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party who in the past tended to gravitate more towards the Soviet Union -- at least from a philosophical perspective -- thanked President George W. Bush and French President Jacques Chirac for their help and support in getting the Syrians out of Lebanon.

At the same time, Jumblatt raised a worrying alarm, saying that Lebanon was on the verge of a coup d'etat.

Almost two years after the departure of Syrian troops, the crisis playing itself out on the streets of the Lebanese capital Beirut has started to intensify. On one side of this political tug-of-war is Iran and its Syrian ally, while on the other is the pro-Western, pro-free market economy, pro-democracy forces. The first prize of this contest is nothing short of the domination of Lebanon.

A coup? It's LEBANON. How are we supposed to be able to tell?

A pro-Hezbollah government in Lebanon will mean another, greater spanking by Israel.

Is Mr. Jumblat evoking some wishful thinking buried deep?

It seems that all the rotten lebanese politicians have reached the end of the line and see no breakthrough to the situation they created to themselves. They reached an advanced level in breaking the constitution and the common laws that they cannot find a way out of the maze.

A military coup? why not, the military are the only people in this country abiding by the law, except of course for the common ordinary citizen who is paying the whole price.

One last thing, a satirical song borrowing the tune of an old syriac liturgical song is making its way up the top ten in Lebanon. It says:
The (political) leaders have left Lebanon
How happy we all feel......

It is 8:49 AM here, good day to all of you

I realize Jumblatt is sort of a political weather vane - but currently, he is doing the right thing by speaking out against Syria.

He appears to be more rational than some others who are associating themselves with Hezbollah, like Michel Aoun.

You said it right : CURRENTLY. What about tomorrow?

So please do not give any credit to the man responsible of the 1983 bloodbath of the Shouf and the repeated shelling of the Marines compound in Beirut Airport from the hills of Shuweifat. That is one period of History Mr. Jumblat is still taking pride in until this year in his speeches at Mukhtara Palace, thanking the support of the syrian army in achieving this exploit. Oh, that was the 'glorious' syrian army of Hafez Assad and VP Khaddam, not that of mini-Assad.

Whatever Jumblat may do, even sacrifying himself as a suicide bomber in the Hamidiyeh market in Damascus, is not enough to redeem himself.
