Wanted: Durbin foe with money (IL GOP seeks candidate against Turban Durbin)
The Daily Herald ^ | February 26, 2007 | Eric Krol

Posted on 02/27/2007 7:01:24 PM PST by Clintonfatigued

A respected Chicago Board of Trade executive from Winnetka and a Long Grove businessman whose family owns the Ben Franklin variety store franchise are among those talking to Illinois Republican leaders about running against Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin next year.

Both Kevin J.P. O'Hara, the chief administrative officer at the Chicago futures exchange, and Steve Greenberg, the wholesale executive, would seem to have the ability to write a check to cover some or all of the costs of a campaign.

State GOP leaders consider that important in finding an opponent for Durbin, given the political dynamics in play. Whoever runs against Durbin already is getting a late start, a situation made worse by a Democratic plan to move up Illinois' 2008 primary to Feb. 5 - six weeks earlier than normal.

The practical effect on the political machinery is that candidates could need to file for office as early as mid-October. That means campaign season could start July 4 instead of the traditional Labor Day kickoff. And given federal campaign fundraising limits, candidates already should have started the money sweepstakes.

To that end, Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna Jr. said he's talked to individuals who could self-fund about challenging Durbin, who's No. 2 in Senate Democratic leadership.

"A number of people have reached out to us who do have some resources," McKenna said. "Voters are interested in non-politicians from time to time, and this might be a good time for it."

McKenna remained tight-lipped about names, but O'Hara and Greenberg each told the Daily Herald they're exploring a run for Senate.

Oh please, please, please let someone get this disgusting human being out of the Senate. It's a beginning anyway. He truly is one of the worst.

Durbin is probably unbeatable, but I do hope they find someone who can at least give him a headache.

Given the lack of good options in Illinois, this is probably the only feasible idea.

Why, so McKenna can pull the rug out of whatever Republican candidate that chooses to run?

The only way to beat Durbin is to run as an Independent. The IL GOP is so hopelessly liberal and corrupt that I'd probably vote for the Libertarian if I lived there.

Jack Ryan. He shouldn't have been taken out the first time.

It'd be nice to see Turbin shown the door.

"It'd be nice to see Turbin shown the door."

Indeed, even among the Senate's Rodents, he's one of the worst.

No longer in ILlinois...but I was born and raised there.

Count me in for a sizeable donation to any strong GOP candidate, prefferably former Military, that will take Durbin on!

I wonder if anybody could talk Denny Hastert into going out in a blaze of glory. He'd probably lose, but he'd certainly make the race interesting.

Don't you love how the Republican party seeks self-financing candidates in so many places so they don't have to waste any money on anyone except their RINOs when it comes time to finance candidates for elections? For the Zillionth time: NEVER GIVE ANY MONEY TO THE RNC or any of the groups who solicit funds and dole out $ to candidates for you, only to individual conservative candidates because if you do, you're financing the RINOs you complain about.

That's what I thought too. If not for the IL GOP, no one would know who Barack Obama is or was.
