DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Vice President Dick Cheney landed in the U.S.-allied Arab monarchy of Oman Sunday, and went directly to talks with the country's foreign minister, Omani government officials said.

A U.S. embassy spokesman in Oman declined to detail Cheney's plans or the focus of his visit to the sparsely populated oil-producing state. But a government official who spoke on condition of anonymity said Cheney was to discuss regional security issues including the U.S. standoff with Iran over its nuclear program with Oman's Foreign Minister Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah.

Oman sits across the strategically important Strait of Hormuz from Iran, through which two-fifths of the world's oil passes.

Oman is the poor one. They want a little larger slice of the pie and ask for some special hand holding before signing the alliance declaration to Iran.

Something's up. When Cheney makes 'the tour', such as he is doing now, it's not just to say hi and sip tea...

###smile###

Brings back memories of what happened after previous 'road trips' by VP Cheney and SecDef Rumsfeld. No wonder the DNCmedia is freaking out.

Apart from it's obvious proximity to Iran and as a likely retaliation target for any attack launched on Iran, here are a number of points on why Oman is important :

* It hosts three Air Force pre-positioning sites with support equipment for 26,000 personnel as well as required equipment and fuel to maintain three air bases.

* Home to the 831st Transport Battalion.

* Home to the 386th and 405th Air Expeditionary Wings

* Home to the 763rd Expeditionary Airlift Squadron and 4410th Air Refueling Squadron.

Cheney is my man for President. There is no one even close to him in terms of leadership--on all levels, military, foreign policy, economic, culture. His weakest area might be moral. It might be tough for him to make the right decisions on homosexuality, but then again, maybe not.

"Three Arab states in the Persian Gulf would be willing to allow the Israel Air force to enter their airspace in order to reach Iran in case of an attack on its nuclear facilities, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Siyasa reported on Sunday.

According to the report, a diplomat from one of the gulf states visiting Washington on Saturday said the three states, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, have told the United States that they would not object to Israel using their airspace, despite their fear of an Iranian response.

Al-Siyasa further reported that NATO leaders are urging Turkey to open its airspace for an Attack on Iran as well and to also open its airports and borders in case of a ground attack.

According to a British diplomat who spoke to an Al-Siyasa correspondent, Turkey will not repeat the mistake it made in 2003, when it refused to open its airspace to U.S. Air Force overflights en route to attacking Iraq."
