I like this Pope , he is not the kind of a guy who worries about who likes what he says or not. He is a man for all seasons. I especially like the idea he had of wishing the eastern rite a Merry Christmas when they celebrated on January 6th. he is helping to unite us against the Antichrist and is winning me every day. Right on you go Holy Father!

I'm a little confused about the Church's position on this issue...

Does the Church oppose genetic engineering because of the methods used (i.e. eliminating the embryos that don't meet the design), or because they oppose the idea of interfering with nature....or both?

Suppose an advanced method were developed which allowed genetic manipulation of a naturally produced zygote...no artificial insemination or destruction of superfluous zygotes/embryos would take place. What would be the position of the Church concerning such a method?

HUMANAE VITAE

Though it is true that sometimes it is lawful to tolerate a lesser moral evil in order to avoid a greater evil or in order to promote a greater good," it is never lawful, even for the gravest reasons, to do evil that good may come of it (18)—in other words, to intend directly something which of its very nature contradicts the moral order, and which must therefore be judged unworthy of man, even though the intention is to protect or promote the welfare of an individual, of a family or of society in general.
