Pressing for tougher national defense and updated trade deals, presidential candidate Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., spoke to students and community members in the basement of the Haldeman Center Monday night in an event sponsored by the Rockefeller Center and the College Republicans.
"I stand for a strong national defense, enforced borders and bringing back high-paying manufacturing and engineering jobs to the United States through the revamping of international trade deals," he said.
Hunter is the second of the 2008 Republican presidential candidates to speak at Dartmouth -- former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney spoke at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center earlier this month -- and will continue his campaign in South Carolina, another early primary state, on Wednesday.
Addressing the recent Democrat-dominated House of Representatives resolution condemning President Bush's troop surge, Hunter said that the problem with the move is that the troop surge has already been implemented.
"We have never before in our history condemned an operation as being a faulty operation that our military was already undertaking," he said. "[Doing this] gives inspiration to our enemies."
Hunter, a former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said that the U.S. interest in Iraq is spreading freedom. He cited American occupation of Japan after World War II and Reagan's peace agreement in El Salvador as examples he believes demonstrate successful democracy promotion.
"I disagree with the fact that we went in wrongly to Iraq, El Salvador was supposed to be our next Vietnam," Hunter said. "There are liberals who have died of old age waiting for the next Vietnam."

Another excerpt from the article:
The event was interrupted for a brief moment for Hunter to conduct a live phone interview with Fox News. The phone call, however, was disconnected after a few minutes, prompting Hunter to ask the audience, "You don't think Hillary would do this do you?"
Christian Ginez '10, a member of the College Republicans, said he was impressed with Hunter.
"I thought he was very personable and very knowledgeable," he said. "He stayed a long time to answer everyone's question and went into a lot of detail."
Hunter is a Vietnam veteran and attended Western State University Law School in San Diego after returning from his deployment. Hunter was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1980, defeating incumbent Lionel Van Deerlin in a highly democratic district.
Just some background info on Hunter and his outspoken nature to go where not many(I don't think any) Republicans go with their spineless nature.

Probably the single loudest obstructionist voice in the House of Representatives in support of the Cheneyac "Beastman" policy in Iraq has been Armed Services Committee chairman Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.). Hunter has been able to use his position to block any meaningful inquiry into the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and at every public opportunity, has railed against those who are demanding such an investigation. He even went after his GOP counterpart in the Senate, John Warner (Va.), for holding three hearings in two weeks on the scandal, practically accusing Warner of treason.
Under great public pressure, Hunter has since held one hearing, for part of one day, and has no intention of having any more. During debate on the Fiscal Year 2005 Defense Authorization bill, on May 19, Hunter declared, "We have had enormous publicity the last number of days about the mess at Abu Ghraib. I estimated we have probably devoted as much media attention to that mess involving now, as identified, some seven personnel, as we did to the Normandy invasion. And that is an imbalance. It is time to refocus." What did he want to refocus on? "The 135,000 great personnel doing their job in Iraq."
On June 14, when the committee took up a resolution of inquiry sponsored by some 40 Democrats, demanding the Pentagon be more forthcoming with documents relating to the prison scandal, Hunter placed the 6,000 pages of the report on the abuse and torture of prisoners filed by U.S. Army General Anthony Taguba (the Taguba Report) on a table at the head of the hearing room and railed at the Democrats, "Isn't that enough for you?"

California Republican Duncan Hunter held a press conference to discuss the treatment of detainees at the island jail, and spent his opening statement going over a daily menu for prisoners that included oven-fried chicken and fresh fruit.
"This is what Osama bin Laden's bodyguards will eat several times a week. Lemon chicken, rice, broccoli, carrots, bread and two types of fruit," Hunter said, inviting a reporter to come eat with him.
Hunter was digging himself out of small hole he got into over the weekend when he said on a news program that the White House is divided over whether to close the jail.
"I think they've come to the conclusion, some members of the White House have come to the conclusion that the legend now, that the legend is different than the fact, and when that's the case you go with the legend that somehow Guantanamo has been a place of abuse and you close it down and you shorten the stories, you shorten the heated debate and you get it off the table and you move on," he said.
I'm waiting to see him on the "Today" show :')
No, but I think "her people" would.
GO DUNCAN HUNTER!!!
Ping!
Right now the Today show is preoccupied with feeding the Giulianis, McCains and Romneys as the only choice. That ought to tell you something. ;) He'll make his mark when he gets the nomination. :p
I'm seeing some anyone but Hilary bumper stickers already. How about some , "The man the media doesn't want you to know about" ones?
In case anyone missed this thread about a great Duncan Hunter interview. Check him out people because there is a great candidate in this race!

The DBM's Hunter, campaign slogan: Duncan Hunter?: Move along...!
I've been talking to the old Reagan democrat style democrats about Hunter. Most seem to like what they hear.
This man could singlehandledly recreate the Reagan revolution. The only people left who would vote against him would be the gay rights lobby, the NARAL lobby, and the affirmative action lobby.
Duncan Hunter for president bump!

Huh??? What 'small hole'?
What he said is fact. Since day one, 'communication' has been a WH and/or 'administration' problem. There's always mixed messages. And after Ari left is just got infinitely WORSE.
And they HAVE given into 'legend over fact'. The "16 words" about Yellow Cake being a prime example. What Dubya said was fact, but after the libs raise a stink based on lies, Condi backtracked, even apologized.
So I don't see any 'small hole'.
That's a "hint"? LOL
