You are misinformed.

I think we agree about a lot of the issues surrounding Mormonism, but you did parse my sentence in the middle, changing the meaning. I said they did not try to force their beliefs on others, except by persuasion.

And Christ told his followers to do just that, spread the gospel throughout the world.

Um. perhaps a reading of the Book of Mormon is in order for you. Here's a taste. 3rd Nephi Chapter 11"
8 And it came to pass, as they understood they cast their eyes up again towards heaven; and behold, they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths, even one to another, and wist not what it meant, for they thought it was an angel that had appeared unto them.

10 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.

This doctrine is heavily misunderstood. I calmer look at the bible shows what is meant by that. Being equal with Christ means co-heirs.

Romans 8:
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together

.John 10:
34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;

Also, if these aren't enough for you, have you ever heard of Saint Hippolytus? He was a great grandson to John the Beloved, lived in the 2nd century after Christ, was a historical saint in the Catholic religion. Here's what he said about becoming as God:

“And you shall be a companion of the Deity, and a co-heir with Christ, no longer enslaved by lusts or passions, and never again wasted by disease. For you have become God: for whatever sufferings you underwent while being a man, these He gave to you, because you were of mortal mould, but whatever it is consistent with God to impart, these God has promised to bestow upon you, because you have been deified, and begotten unto immortality. This constitutes the import of the proverb, "Know yourself; "i.e., discover God within yourself, for He has formed you after His own image. For with the knowledge of self is conjoined the being an object of God's knowledge, for you are called by the Deity Himself. Be not therefore inflamed, O you men, with enmity one towards another, nor hesitate to retrace7 with all speed your steps. For Christ is the God above all, and He has arranged to wash away sin from human beings,7 rendering regenerate the old man. And God called man His likeness from the beginning, and has evinced in a figure His love towards you. Jesus Christ is my Savior. The Mormon missionaries give up two years of their lives to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. During these two years, they do not watch TV, go to movies, read newspapers, date or get involved in worldly pursuits; instead they dedicate themselves to serving and loving others. They will help you move; they will mow your lawn; they will NOT bother you. I do not understand why conservative Christians hate us so much. It's interesting.
