Translator Who Faked Identity Pleads Guilty To Having Secret Data

An Arabic translator who used an assumed identity to get work as a contractor for the U.S. Army in Iraq pleaded guilty yesterday to federal charges of possessing classified national defense documents, including sensitive material about the insurgency that he took from an 82nd Airborne Division intelligence group in 2004.

The translator obtained U.S. citizenship under a false identity before securing a job in August 2003 with Titan Corp., which supplied translators to the U.S. military to aid in fighting the war in Iraq. The man then used his false identity to get secret and top-secret clearances -- access to extremely sensitive material that is supposed to be given only after thorough background checks -- Justice Department officials said.

Griles, former assistant attorney general Sue Ellen Wooldridge and ConocoPhillips lobbyist Don R. Duncan bought this vacation home in Kiawah Island, S.C., last year, paying $980,000. Griles and Wooldridge live together. (Alice Keeney -- Associated Press)

Authorities said yesterday in a news release that they do not even know the translator's real name and that they refer to him in court documents under several of his aliases, including "Abu Hakim" and "Abdulhakeem Nour."

This is an outrage! I think they should give the perp the max -- three year's loss of security clearance, plus a $50k fine.

How about this -- do you think this is the ONLY one? But they won't use Jewish translators because why?

The translator obtained U.S. citizenship under a false identity

So does this mean he is a citizen or isn't? That is important in determining if he committed treason.

I thought that the whole point of vetting for a security clearance was to ensure that something like this didn't happen. Who screwed up?

What does this have to do with the translator story?

Come on people, you are all just delaying the inevitable. Who cares if someone faked who they are. They were just trying to make a better life for themselves in the US. Who can fault them? (sarcasm...REALLY!)

~ ok that was extremely difficult to type.

There are soooo many new applicants for security clearances that there is not enought time to do them all properly (imho). So backgrounds are done with "a lick and a promise" as my dear old mom used to say. That and keeping their fingers crossed.

My thought exactly!! Totally out of any context to the headline and the major point of the story. Poster must have conflated two "cut&pastes".

Well said. I was about to post something similar. The bastard should be treated the way we treat anyone who steals classified documents.
