CA: Governor taps two (more) Dems for air board (3 hours before saying "I'm a proud Republican.")

Only three hours before addressing California's semiannual state Republican convention, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the appointment of two Democrats to the state Air Resources Board.

Environmentalists and Democrats cheered the appointees to the commission given the task of overseeing the implementation of last year's landmark global warming agreement.

The new members of the air board are Jerry Hill, 59, a member of the San Mateo County Utility Sustainability Task Force and the Bay Conservation and Development Commission, and Daniel Sperling, 55, founding director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis.

"These are great appointments. These are the best two people that the governor could have appointed to fulfill the very challenging mission of improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gases," said Bill Magavern, senior legislative advocate for the Sierra Club. "This is the dream team for the air board."

Republicans were less enthused.

"It is distressing," said Sen. George Runner, R-Lancaster. "I am hoping that these appointees are sensitive about the balance that needs to be there with the environmental responsibilities of the Air Resources Board and the business needs in the state of California."

The air board, long one of the most powerful state commissions, gained renewed importance last year when the Legislature passed a global warming measure. It requires a 25 percent reduction in greenhouse gases produced in California by 2020. Much of the responsibility for implementing that law falls on the air board.

The new appointments bring the number of Democrats on the 11-member board to seven, including Chairman Robert Sawyer. One vacancy remains.

Many of us are breathless at this latest announcement.. Our breathing was already laboured .. and as you mentioned taxed to the hilt already.. and likely will even be more so in the future.

Remember, that when a republican hires democrats, it's because he is looking for the best person for a given job. When a democrat hires a republican, it's because he can't find a democrat, *and* because he can't ignore the problem.

Red Arnold is really a proud Democrat in all but name.

Why should Arnold listen to the right? They stayed home on election day and he won without them. Meanwhile the only conservative voice in CA went down to his third statewide defeat, Tom McClintok....the right has only themselves to blame

There's no Republican party without Conservatives. As for McClintock, Ah-nold kneecapped him and all our Conservative GOP candidates before the election. He obviously prefers rodents in statewide office not challenging him. More RINO destruction.

Spoken like a good liberal troll, relishing in the Arnold's leftist agenda and overt destruction of his "fellow Republican" candidates.

little by little they mold the populace to their ends,, taking this that and the other thing from them over the years,, all for the common good, of course.

Between AB32 and Arnie's executive order on Global Warming, CARB will be given vast power to change our lives. Appointing a bunch of leftists to these posts will make it happen oh-so-much-quicker and more radically.

Ah, yes... common good. (...spit!)

B.S. As anyone who was here during the war over that spin can show you, turnout in traditional Rep areas was typical for mid-terms. What happened is that traditionally Democrat-ick areas were up significantly. Rs didn't stay home, Dems came out. Since Arnold is one of them, he got a lot of their votes.

Why should he listen to the right? Because he has a big fat (R) after his name, took large amounts of election campaign funds from (R)s, and should support "his" party. Not that I expect him to, because he has a long history of stabbing supporters in the back once they have served as a ladder step for him.

McClintock lost largely because Dear Leader repaid Tom's campaign loyalty by backstabbing him on the weekend just before the election, which was used by McClintock's opponent in last minute hit ads. It was so helpful to have Arnold declaring the Rep. Lt. Gov. candidate "totally wrong" on major issues five days out.

What needs to happen is for Arnold to drop the hypocrisy and formally leave the GOP. He is governing to the Left of Davis or Moonbeam.
