A U.S. Army CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter

The Army doesn't fly the Sea Knight, the Marines and Navy do. The Army uses the larger, but similar, CH-47 Chinook.

I'm not denying there has been a new and tragic rise in downed copters, ...

Yup. My question was why. Is it just a statistical thing or have the insurgents learned new ways to shoot down copters?

Wonder why they keep flying them into zones that have not been swept clean of bad boys ??

That's what they are for, to take the good guys into the fight to get rid of the bad guys.

Last I heard that there was no comparison to today's war and Vietnam.

Maybe they are not such old weapons!

It will eventually be revealed what the enemy is using. Sooner or later!

Almost no details in the article. Can't tell whether this is due to new tactics, new weapons or just a statistical anomaly.

Military officials gave no cause for the crash of the CH-46 Sea Knight near Fallujah in Anbar province, about 20 miles from Baghdad.

The military needs to improvise and convert a few heilos to armor upgraded mini gunships and fly around flushing them out. With their budget how hard could it be?

There is, likely, Iranian tactical support and training that is helping them.

That is also true.

No link found in Iraq helicopter crashes: Pentagon

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US military has not established a link connecting the five helicopter crashes in Iraq over the past three weeks, a Pentagon spokesman said.

"Clearly, each time we have an aircraft go down, we take a look at it, and given the proximity of these events happening together, we'll have people looking at them not only as individual events but collectively, as to whether or not there is any correlation," spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters.

Asked whether the frequency of the crashes meant that insurgents were better armed, Whitman said: "I don't think I can make any sort of conclusion like that at this point."

On Wednesday, the US military said seven crew members and passengers died when a US Marine helicopter crashed in Al-Anbar province, a Sunni Arab insurgent bastion west of Baghdad, earlier in the day.

Officials are investigating what caused the crash. Whitman said they have not yet indicated whether the cause was "mechanical, human (or) hostile."

The crash brings to five the number of US helicopters that have crashed in Iraq in less than three weeks.

On Sunday, the US military revealed that four US helicopters which had crashed since January 20, killing a total of 20 troops and private security guards, had been shot down by insurgents.

Armor weighs a lot. Weighing a lot and helicopters don't mix. And there are many parts of a helicopter you can't armor effectively.

Even the Apaches got shot up badly in GWII.

You don't think we could modify a jolly green giant for hunter killer operations. The heavy lifting capability could be utilized for armament. They are fairly stout.

The US Army flies CH47 Chinook's. I didn't know they had CH46's. Good info.

I imagine there are spotters near airfields who are relaying flight info along probable flight routes.
