Rudy Giuliani vs. the Greens John Berlau | 2/6/2007 @ 2:44 pm [Contact John Berlau]

Former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani has all but declared himself a Republican presidential candidate by filing an official “statement of candidacy” and saying he is “in to win.” In my new book, Eco-Freaks: Environmentalism Is Hazardous to Your Health, I reveal a surprising fact about Giuliani that so far has been little discussed in national coverage: Giuliani’s record as New York mayor of standing up to green groups to take steps to promote prosperity and public health. In Eco-Freaks, I detail Giuliani’s tough fight to spray pesticides to curb the spread of the newly-arrived West Nile virus in 1999.

In a section of Eco-Freaks entitled “Rudy Stands Up to the Greens,” I write of Giuliani’s actions when the virus first appeared in the U.S. in 1999 and was diagnosed in New York City as West Nile. Giuliani “ordered aggressive, but targeted spraying of pesticides in spots that mosquitoes were most likely to congregate. But environmentalists fought him all the way. They downplayed the very real risk of West Nile — to humans and animals — while hyping the risks of peticides.” Even after being threatened with lawsuits, Giuliani persisted.

Giuliani’s courageous actions may have prevented West Nile — although still a serious virus that is made worse by continuing enviro campaigns against mosquito spraying — from becoming a rapid bird-flu like pandemic in the U.S. after it first arrived in New York City. As I write in Eco-Freaks, although he didn’t receive the glory for these actions as he did for those in 2001, “Giuliani displayed [in the West Nile crisis] the courageous leadership the nation would again observe in the days after the 9/11 attacks.”

Giuliani has also made statements in support of nuclear energy and Arctic oil drilling. In the past, Giuliani has not been afraid to be seen as “environmentally incorrect” if he belives the policies he advocates are correct for the nation. If he continues this straight talk during the campaign, Americans may be attracted to another courageous side of Giuliani.

I'd like to hear him talk about this in more detail.

Rudy has more cajones than the entire Congressional Republican leadership put together.

Rudy has a strong 84% conservative approval rating. (Battle ground poll as of Jan.11, '07)

The rebirth of New York City, the most visible urban achievement in the 20th century is the work of the person now dubbed America’s mayor. For the millions of Americans who live in New York and the millions more who work or whose livelihood has been affected by its revival the contrast between the pre and post Giuliani years could not be more striking.

His defense of Israel and intolerance for Arab and U.N. sponsored anti-Semitism is legendary.

He figuratively walked into the lion's den of a crime ridden, high tax, and decaying city and carried out a conservative agenda of tax cuts, crime reduction and, in the case of the Brooklyn Museum, defense of religion in the public square. On this count Giuliani seems to be the winner in the public character category for his extraordinary vision and leadership.

Indeed, in one recent poll, majorities of Republicans who were informed of Giuliani’s views on social issues said that they were either minor issues or no issues at all; only 16% said that they wouldn't vote for him after being informed of these views.

In the online GOP Bloggers poll, Giuliani is consistently one of the few candidates to end up with a net positive acceptability rating. These internet denizens are well-informed, and overwhelmingly self-describe as conservative (78% self-describe as 7 or higher on a 10-scale of conservatism). If these people can support Rudy, anyone can.

Rudy also kicked Arafat out of a concert hall. This was back when it wasn't fashionable and Clinton was hosting the terrorist in the White House as his most frequent guest.

I remember this West Nile spraying incident. Funny how one forgets these details and it comes back now that we're thinking about 2008.

I was reminded the other day how he defunded an art exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum because it was that anti-Christian crucifix/urine kind of garbage.

I think it's a stupid move for him to allow the cover of the NY Post to show that...unless he has no say in it? I mean, it's sort of a tabloid-ish paper, isn't it?

His THIRD, much younger wife? Two failed marriages behind him? This stuff matters to a lot of Conservatives, and he's going to need EVERY one of their votes now and later if he's nominated.

Just a very poor PR move, IMHO, if he had any say in it. And if he didn't he'd better do some damage control, toot sweet. I'd expect something like that from, say, Donald Trump, but someone that wants to appear Presidential? Nope.

I doubt he has any say on what the NY Post puts on the cover. And whatever his past marriage problems, I don't think kissing his wife is anything he needs to apologize for.

When you are a public figure you have no control over what appears on the front page of newspapers or rags.

And going after Arafat at a time when Clinton was practically dating the guy took guts!

I'm taking a wait and see attitude. I'm not impressed with any of the GOP candidates right now. I'll give Rudy points on the WOT, but he has a lot of personal baggage.

How you conduct your personal life is as important as your public life, IMHO. But that's just me. :)
