:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
How al-Qaida Fared in 2006
-Full Story-

In 2006, agents of al-Qaida, as well as those inspired by its ideology, continued their attacks. Violence in Iraq intensified, and Afghanistan saw its bloodiest year since 2001.

Despite worsening chaos on those fronts, counterterrorist forces arrested and killed high-profile terrorists and kept the West free from attack. But these actions don't appear to have weakened the appeal of al-Qaida's agenda. "Home-grown" militants around the world joined its jihad, as regional fighting heightened perceptions of a global war on Islam.

Here's an assessment of some of the most significant gains and losses for al-Qaida last year: Read more..

Regarding the plane windshields...

This may sound odd, but could a high-pitched tone directed right at the planes or a certain vibration from a plane going overhead -- could either of these possibilities be accurate? Or could it be temperature-related?

If all else fails, blame Bush -- that's using the "easy button."

"Cyber officials: Chinese hackers attack 'anything and everything'"

BY Josh Rogin
Published on Feb. 13, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NORFOLK, Va. -- At the Naval Network Warfare Command here, U.S. cyber defenders track and investigate hundreds of suspicious events each day. But the predominant threat comes from Chinese hackers, who are constantly waging all-out warfare against Defense Department networks, Netwarcom officials said.

Attacks coming from China, probably with government support, far outstrip other attackers in terms of volume, proficiency and sophistication, said a senior Netwarcom official, who spoke to reporters on background Feb 12. The conflict has reached the level of a campaign-style, force-on-force engagement, he said.

“They will exploit anything and everything,” the senior official said, referring to the Chinese hackers’ strategy. And although it is impossible to confirm the involvement of China’s government, the attacks are so deliberate, “it’s hard to believe it’s not government-driven,” the official said."

That doesn't sound odd if you're a Tom Clancy fan. Everytime I hear about a laser being aimed at airplanes, I think of Tom Clancy. (also passenger jets crashing into buildings) Anything seems possible now days.

Islamic Radicals Seek a Spectacular Slaughter
strategy page ^ | February 17, 2007

Police and troops on Sulawesi were put on high alert, because military intelligence had picked up information indicating that Islamic radicals from all over Indonesia were moving to Sulawesi in an attempt to launch a spectacular attack on local Christians.

Australia has warned its citizens to stay away from Central Sulawesi, where most of the violence tends to take place. To make matters worse, the Christians are ready to strike back if the Islamic terrorists go after them again.

Over the last few years, some 2,000 people have died in religious strife on Sulawesi.

The Islamic radicals need a spectacular operation to revive declining enthusiasm ...

Indonesian police on Thursday arrested two suspected Muslim militants, including the key leader in a string of religious-inspired violence in the strife-torn eastern island of Sulawesi.

In 2000, Laskar Jihad sent hundreds of young men to the eastern Maluku Islands to wage jihad against Christians living there in a conflict that killed as many as 10,000 people.

Relatives of killer: 1997 Empire State shooting was revenge for U.S. support for Israel

Ten years ago a Palestinian Arab shot seven people, killing one, at the Empire State Building. After insisting it wasn't a political attack for ten years, now his family admits that it was indeed an attack in service of the jihad against Israel.

With all the talk these days about how terrible it is for some people to question whether or not the killer's Islamic religion had anything to do with the Salt Lake City mall murders, this is an especially intriguing story.

"Killer's daughter admits it was political," by Mahmoud Habboush in the New York Daily News, with thanks to MJN:

GAZA CITY - Ali Abu Kamal's relatives say they are tired of lying about why the Palestinian opened fire on the observation deck of Empire State Building, killing a tourist and injuring six other people before committing suicide.

Kamal's widow insisted after the shooting spree that the attack was not politically motivated. She said that her husband had become suicidal after losing $300,000 in a business venture.

But in a stunning admission, Kamal's 48-year-old daughter Linda told the Daily News that her dad wanted to punish the U.S. for supporting Israel - and revealed her mom's 1997 account was a cover story crafted by the Palestinian Authority.

"A Palestinian Authority official advised us to say the attack was not for political reasons because that would harm the peace agreement with Israel," she told The News on Friday. "We didn't know that he was martyred for patriotic motivations, so we repeated what we were told to do."

But three days after the shootings, Kamal's family got a copy of a letter that was found on his body, they said. The letter said he planned the violence as a political statement, his daughter said.

"When we wanted to clarify that to the media, nobody listened to us," she said. "His goal was patriotic. He wanted to take revenge from the Americans, the British, the French and the Israelis."

She said the family became certain that he carried out the attack for political reasons after reading his diary.

"He wrote that after he raised his children and made sure that his family was all right he decided to avenge in the highest building in America to make sure they get his message," said Linda, who works for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees....

Feds Probe Suspicious Fires At Two L.A. Churches
CBS) LOS ANGELES ^ | Feb 18, 2007 10:39 am US/Pacific

Posted on 02/18/2007 8:43:45 AM PST by BenLurkin

LOS ANGELES A suspicious fire broke out at a South Los Angeles church Saturday night, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The fire was reported at 8:47 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1284 E. 50th St., and was put out by 9:35 p.m., Los Angeles city fire spokeswoman Melissa Kelley said.

Heavy smoke came from the burning first floor and choir loft, Kelley said. No injuries were reported.

Most of the damage was on a mezzanine level, CBS 2 reported. The sanctuary of the church escaped damage, according to Channel 2.

Church member Bob Hewins told the station Sunday was the pastor's second anniversary, and services would be held in the parking lot if necessary.

The FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and arson investigators went to the scene, according to the camera crew, indicating that the fire was of suspicious origin and was possibly being investigated as a hate crime.

In Boyle Heights about 7 p.m., firefighters were sent to Assumption Church at Evergreen Avenue and Blanchard Street, where someone threw a homemade firebomb, said fire Capt. Sparky Holloway.

The fire burned itself out before firefighters arrived, he said.

It was unclear if the two incidents were related, he said.

Granger Church Fire Ruled Arson

A weekend fire at a Granger church was apparently no accident.

Investigators say a fire at Northpointe Bible Church on State Road 23, near Adams was deliberately set.

The fire damage was discovered Sunday morning although it was not extensive enough to cancel services last weekend.

The fire apparently went out by itself and the fire department was not called to respond.

Any attempt to burn a church is taken very seriously.

Crimestoppers is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest or conviction in the case.

If you have any information, please call 288-STOP.

"Burned church doesn’t deter C.B. congregation"
By JOCELYN BETHUNE

GABARUS LAKE —

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The one thing that we are going to realize when we get into the service is that the church is still intact," he said Saturday. "We often think of the building as the church, but it’s really the people."

Churches from Louisbourg and Sydney have donated or loaned items such as the pulpit and a communion table, Mrs. MacLeod said. The items once belonged to the former Wesley United Church before its congregation and that of Zion United in Gabarus Lake amalgamated about 15 years ago, she said."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Investigators were on the scene early last week but have been unable to determine what caused the fire, he said, but another team from Halifax will sift through the rubble this week.

"The fire burned so completely that there really is nothing left but fine ash," he said.

Other buildings, including a church hall, a seniors hall and a store in the area, have been destroyed by fire recently, he said.

"We’re hoping it was an electrical fire rather than arson," Mr. Hussey said.

The blaze broke out early last Saturday morning. The building was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, and they were unable to save the church or the antiques inside."

Stumbling Across Islamic Hackers
Strategypage ^ | 2/16/07

Posted on 02/18/2007 8:58:53 AM PST by Valin

Many of us know the Internet is overrun with scams and crooks. We only have to look at the spam that slips through our spam filters to get a taste. Less known is the fact that some of these Internet crooks are doing it to support Islamic terrorism. An example of this was recently revealed at a computer security conference, as two researchers described how they had worked their way into the Internet criminal underground, to find out how it operated, and came up against a group of hackers that also maintained several Islamic radical websites, and that used some of their stolen credit card data was used to buy communications gear and laptops of the type favored by terrorists.

The researchers brought in law enforcement when it became obvious they had some real bad guys in their sights. All that could be revealed was that some of the hackers operations (like botnets) were shut down, and that the bad guys were still out there, in the Middle East and Germany. Actually, these hackers may have been arrested, but in this aspect of the war on terror, you don't broadcast that sort of thing. That's because you want the people the hackers work with (rarely face-to-face) to believe the Islamic radical hackers are still in business. That way, you can identify more of the people involved, especially those terrorists on the receiving end of stolen money and goods.
