There was a local warning issued for the Mariana Islands for a potential tsunami from underwater land slides.

Below is a graphic showing potential travel times of a hypothetical tsunami related to this quake, with each color band representing 60 minutes elapsed time from the time of the earthquake.

Information Statement:

A text product issued to inform that an earthquake has occurred and to advise regarding its potential to generate a tsunami.

In most cases, an Information Statement indicates there is no threat of a destructive tsunami affecting the issuing TWC's AOR, and are used to prevent unnecessary evacuations as the earthquake may have been felt in coastal areas.

An Information Statement may, in appropriate situations, caution about the possibility of a destructive local tsunami. A supplemental Information Statement may be issued if important additional information is received such as a sea level reading showing a tsunami signal.

An Information Statement may also be upgraded to a watch or warning if appropriate. Further, the Information Statement may be used to recommend a warning when protocols agreed to by emergency management authorities within an AOR so specify. NOAA Information Statement

To: Tsunami warning system participants in the U.S. West Coast States, Alaska, and British Columbia
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (Experimental Web Product)
Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #1 issued 01/30/2007 at 1:49PM PST

A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning or watch is in effect for these areas.

Based on the earthquake magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.

At 1:38 PM Pacific Standard Time on January 30, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 6.9 occurred in the Mariana Islands region.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii will issue messages for Hawaii and other areas of the Pacific outside California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska.

This will be the only statement issued for this event by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center unless conditions warrant. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table. (NOTE: Travel time maps and tables indicate predicted times only, not that a wave was generated.)

Looks like the seas will be a little choppy this morning in the Pacific.

Any quakes near the Northern Mariana Trench makes me very, very nervous... Puerto Rico has a long and deep trench too and my family lives in Old San Juan. With a powerful e-quake there, the northern part of the island might "fall" into the trench...
