Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is touring the hardest-hit of California's farmland today, as efforts continue to gauge the damage done by the recent cold snap.
The tour of Central Valley farms and orchards coincides with the opening of one-stop assistance centers in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and 16 other communities for agricultural workers out of work because of the frigid temperatures.
The centers are offering job and unemployment assistance, food, healthcare and other services, according to the governor's office.
New centers are at the following locations:
* Workforce Development Center
1151 Spruce Street
Riverside, CA 92507
* San Bernardino Employment Resource Center
646 North Sierra Way
San Bernardino, CA 92415
The assistance centers are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will remain in operation weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for as long as necessary. More centers will be established as the need arises.
In addition, six mobile office units will conduct outreach to more remote regions in the counties with the assistance from La Cooperativa and other nonprofits that work with the farm worker population.
The cold snap is expected to leave 12,000 people out of work and to cause prices of some fruits to skyrocket.
A report released this week shows the state's more than $1 billion citrus industry suffered at least $800 million in losses during the five-day freeze. But that toll is expected to increase as growers look more closely at the damage.
ICE should run a sting here and pull a bunch of buses behind these centers and wheel them back "home" as they come for their "assistance", that's if the recent showings of arrests in the state weren't much more than for show..
(Couldn't resist :-)
love the slippers. ;-)
He's going to tell them all about his 4% payroll tax for socialized medicine and how it will save them money.
I lost half my avacado's, lemons and oranges, where do we sign up to get some of the billions in relief or is it all going to ADM?
12,000 out of work? That must be just in Riverside County.
Watch as the farmers collect their insurance and Ag Dept money then turn around and sell the oranges for juice at a profit.
Oranges to into powder for concentrate. While they won't get as much for them they will sell them. The pickers should be working on getting the damaged ones down not sure why people are out of work.
According to the government they only come to work then go home after the work is done.
Next he should tell them about his Big Government plan to fight global warming.
If he'd drive around in his SUV maybe he could warm the earth up and help out a little bit.
Big Blast of globle warmin. Try to remember that Guv.
