Mayor Ken Corley of Brazoria, Texas, has proposed a city ordinance that would make using the word in an offensive fashion a crime equal to disturbing the peace and punishable by a fine of up to $500.

The 62-year-old mayor, who is a self-described "middle-class white boy," came up with the idea after watching Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton discuss banning the word on TV after "Seinfeld" comedian Michael Richards used the word in an act last November.

"White-Boy", in reference to an adult is insulting to me.

Coming?

They've already been here for quite some time.
It is a criminally and civilly punishable offense to make an unwanted pass at another person during most of one's waking lifetime.

Representative government and elective democracy means that morality is the will of the elected officials who represent the people.

There is no such thing as freedom of speech, and there never has been. There is freedom to be a little bit controversial, so long as a reasonably large enough group of people also agree with you. Nothing more. Never has been more.

...self-described "middle-class white boy,"...

In other words, a "cracker".

Under the proposed Brazoria ordinance, users of the N-word would be fined only if a complaint were filed against them, thus protecting those who think they are using the word as a term of endearment. > Always follow-up the N-word with - I love you man.

Does this mean that rappers and black comedians will no longer be welcome in Brazoria, Texas?

What about the F-word? Heck, I think that old comedy routine about the seven dirty words will have to be changed?

Does each demographic get to choose one word to ban? Gays, straights, whites, latinos, men, women, blind people, obese people, Catholics, Muslims, Baptists, Jews, Orientals, Indians, people from Taxachussetts, pilots, golfers, etc... ? Everybody choose the ONE word you want prohibited. What word would mutes choose?

While people who use such a term (including those of African descent) should be both ostrocized and criticized by those around them--pressured to change their behavior, using such a term is still protected by free speech. Similarly, neo-Nazis have the right to support anti-Semitism. Scum has to be tolerated to protect greater freedom.

The police would love it. A law like this would give them another reason to keep from actually arresting real criminals.

Real police work can be hard and sometimes dangerous...

I don't mind public indecency laws for cursing. Norms for public behavior aren't the slippery slope of communism.

However, the mayor would have better luck with the F-word. The problem with banning "nigger" is that strict enforcement will fall predominantly on blacks, especially young black males, and the NAACP and ACLU will charge that this is a racist law.

That may be the ultimate purpose of the law. Sneaky sneaky...
