The director of the CIA praised the Philippines on Thursday for its fight against terrorists, saying the country's government and military have worked closely with the United States to decrease the threat from extremists.
CIA Director Michael Hayden told lawmakers that U.S.-Philippine cooperation has "contributed greatly to strengthening the capacity of the Philippine armed forces and the Philippine security services."
"In terms of what intelligence and military power can do, it's done it in this part of the global war" against terror, Hayden said at a House of Representatives Intelligence Committee hearing.
On Wednesday, the Philippine military announced the death of Abu Sulaiman, a senior leader of the Abu Sayyaf extremist group. He had been was wanted for plotting the kidnapping of American and Filipino tourists from a resort on the southeastern island of Palawan in 2001. One of the Americans, Guillermo Sobero, was beheaded.
Rep. Todd Tiahrt said the United States has "trained the Philippine military, and we've given them tools necessary to make that country safer. And this is a success story."

There are other articles, as well, which state that the War on Islamic Terrorism is going well in the Phillipines. It is being overshadowed by the Iraq War, unfortunately.

Actually, that's probably a good thing. Keep the media focused on Iraq while our allies (with the US's help) clean up the other cesspools of Islamic radicalism.

January 18, 2007: On Jolo, marines encountered 30 Abu Sayyaf rebels, and killed ten of them. Three marines were also killed. Two rebels were also captured. The military has been putting enormous pressure on Abu Sayyaf, putting over 6,000 troops in pursuit of the last few hundred Abu Sayyaf diehards. This pursuit has gone on for over a year on Jolo, and apparently Abu Sayyaf has run out of places to hide, and the locals have grown tried of trying to hide the rebels.
January 16, 2007: On Jolo island, troops clashed with a group of about sixty Abu Sayyaf, and killed senior terrorist leader Abu Solaiman. Military forces continued to pursue the fleeing terrorists, and soon discovered, and captured, a rebel camp. Solaiman is one of the five top leaders who that carried out many kidnappings of foreigners, and the bombing of a ferry in 2004, that killed 200 people. The U.S. has offered a $5 million reward for his capture.
