Women drivers? They’re safer than men
MSNBC ^ | 8:57 p.m. MT, Jan 18, 2007 | Seth Borenstein

WASHINGTON - That age-old stereotype about dangerous women drivers is shattered in a big new traffic analysis: Male drivers have a 77 percent higher risk of dying in a car accident than women, based on miles driven.

And the author of the research says he takes it to heart when he travels — his wife takes the wheel.

“I put a mitt in my mouth and ride shotgun,” said David Gerard, a Carnegie Mellon University researcher who co-authored a major new U.S. road risk analysis.

The study holds plenty of surprises.

This study is flawed right from the beginning. Being statistically less likely to die in an accident doesn't automatically make you a safer driver. There's plenty of people who cause death and carnage on the highway and come through it with nothing but a bent fender.

New England is the safest region for drivers — despite all those stories about crazy Boston drivers.

Now I know this article is pure crap.

That's similar to what I thought. Being more likely to die doesn't mean they're more likely to cause an accident.

The women cause the accidents. Talking on the cell phone ,putting their make-up on, driving 40 in the fast lane.

In the article, the author explained that this is only based on the fatality rate and theorized that the traffic is so jammed up in much of New England that accidents have lower fatality rates because they are at lower speeds.

These women today cannot drive a car unless they have a cell phone attached to their ear!

And death is hardly the only measure of safe or unsafe driving. Their study also relies upon the assumption that the fatality is also the cause as opposed to the victim. I could just as easily and improbably use their stats to prove the case that women are obviously killing off men using vehicles as the weapon.

What's worse are the parents who buy their freshly licensed 16 year old daughter a Land Rover, who certainly can't handle the size or power, then starts driving her friends everywhere, drinking (soda, coffee) and eating while driving, putting on make-up, and talking on the phone while she's laying in bed. Not just talking, but motioning with her hand, saying that loud "I know!!" while taking her gaze skywards, and listening to music loud enough to not hear a fire truck zoom past her.

I have a female co-worker who skewed her center rear-view mirror to see her little kid in the backseat while she was talking to him. She did this on the interstate. She ran somebody out of the right traffic lane and into the breakdown lane right in front of a cop. The cop chased her for about 2 miles. Since her mirror was skewed, she didn't see him with his flashers. Because her radio was blaring while she was blabbing at her kid, she didn't hear the siren.

When she finally pulled over, she got a stern lecture from the cop and a $100 ticket. A guy would've gotten his face slammed into the pavement at gunpoint and a free ride to the county lockup.

The Beltway in Boston as well as 295 North is almost as bad as the D.C. Beltway regarding speed and recklessness. I know I was stationed in both areas.

My experience in driving, all over the US, is that the more liberal an area, the worse the drivers.

Boston drivers are the worst and the rudest and the dumbest. But then, isn't that what you would expect from the Bay State? After all, the libs know best what is best for us.

The Cape Cod Orca not with standing, over all Massachusetts drivers are among the best in the country, I always enjoy (or don't hate as much) driving through that state compared to other states.

However on the flip side Connecticut drivers are utterly terrible and clueless. Driving through that state is always a nightmare

Maine. Maine drivers are the worst in New England. Either doing 90 and aggressive, or doing 40 on 495. There's no in between.

Of course New Englanders know that the WORST drivers of all are Canadian truck drivers - especially logging trucks.

My thoughts as well. The drivers in Austin, especially the ones with kerry/edwards bumper stickers still on their Volvos, have to be the most clueless people on the road.

Actually, the reason that Boston generally gets decent grades on these studies is because of the low number of fatalities. The reason for the low number of fatalities is generally the vehicle isn't going fast enough to cause serious injury. Hard to die in a car accident if your car is only going 10 mph.

I only spent a couple of weeks TDY near Boston and will not disagree with you on the traffic there! Personally, my least favorite place to drive is the DC area although I must admit I have never tried to drive in New York City.
