Were all the pundits wrong about Hillary's strength?

For years, the assumption has been nearly universal that Hillary Clinton would have an easy path to the 2008 Dem nomination. She had the money, the establishment support and the great goodwill among Democrats for the first Clinton administration going for her.

Well, maybe everyone was wrong. Reason Online's David Weigel makes the case:

Rasmussen Reports has been polling the Democratic field, and today they measure the strength of Hillary Clinton's presidential bid: She's down to 22 percent support in the primary and fading fast.

That's one poll with a sizable (5 percent) margin of error, but it's an incredibly weak showing for Clinton.

Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D) formally announced his plans to run for President and instantly finds himself near the top of the heap. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of 401 Likely Democratic Primary Voters finds that 22% favor New York Senator Hillary Clinton (D) while 21% prefer Obama. Obama has consistently been in second place in several Rasmussen Reports polls, but this is the first time he has been in a virtual tie with the former First Lady.

John Edwards polls at 15 percent; he's up 6 since the last poll, Obama's up 4. Hillary is down 12 points from the last poll in early December.

How sad is this for Clinton? In 1999 we (blessedly) didn't start the presidential race this early, but Texas Gov. George Bush was coming in around 40 percent support in Republican primary polls. A poll taken by Opinion Research Corporation (CNN's pollster, now that Gallup's split off from the network) in Jan 6-11, 1999, had Bush at 40 percent, Elizabeth Dole at 22 percent, Jack Kemp at 8, and a bunch of single-digiters including Dan Quayle and some guy named John McCain. Most Republicans had heard of Bush (or thought he was his dad) and kind of liked him. Every Democrat knows who Hillary Clinton is, and almost 4/5 of them are looking for another candidate. It's a blow to the vaunted "support the war, don't support Grand Theft Auto" playbook.

The punchline: This poll was taken before Obama announced he was in the race.

I would add that Rasmussen Reports, while derided in some establishment media circles as an unworthy upstart, had a pretty darn good track record in the 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns.

Obama-mania, fueled primarily by the hillary dud factor, is spoiling the clintons' plans. Obama's charisma and blank slate are the perfect antidote to hillary's repulsiveness and baggage.

So what's a ruthless power-hungry couple to do?

Well, the one thing they must do -- and do quickly -- is to get control of the presidential polling mechanism. The clintons must manufacture polls that will convince the primary voters not to believe their lying eyes.

Do you remember in early December of 2003 the media told us John Kerry didn't have a chance at the 2004 Democratic nomination. The only way he even had enough money to stay in the race was by morgaging his home. A lot of posts were made here on FR asking if it was really his wifes house he was putting in hock.

Kerry in early December of 2003, according to the press, was getting few if any donations and even fewer supporters for the Democratic nomination.

Do you recall that the hot candidate for the Democratic nomination in early December of 2003 was Dr. Howard Dean. Dean you'll recall had this fantastic ability to raise huge sums of money on the INTERNET. He was the high teck candidate and certain to be the Democratic Nominee?

The media is all hype.

Hillary will be the nominee in 2008 and her running mate will not be Obama. Remember Bill in 1992? He chose a running mate that was boring and dull. There is no way either Bill or Hillary would select a running mate that could out shine them. She will have a dull booring running mate just like Bill had in 1992.

Remember Bill chose Gore because he was dull and booring and all the comparisons to Bill would be favorable to Bill.

I appreciate the article. But as you know more than most - the Clinton Mafia Machine infects and touches untold thousands of apparatchniks. Obama is a mere fly to flick...one way or another. If they can't buy him off (with a vp nomination, for instance), they will find ways to take care of him.....maybe he has a sibling that might get hit by a truck - twice - to get the message across. But I believe the CMM will be more subtle - hints here, hisses there, planted in just the right places. Obama will be a mere whiff in the wind by 2008.

Re: representation that Rasmussen polling was correct in 2000 and 2004. While Rasmussen was very good in '04, in 2000 they were terrible. Their final poll on election day had Bush ahead nationally by 10 points. How can a pollster be ten points off?
