The first woman to serve as Saginaw's mayor could become the first councilwoman to serve time for a felony conviction if prosecutors make their arson fraud case stick against Wilmer Jones Ham....
But Councilman Willie Haynes defended Ham's decision to stay on and dismissed the accusations, saying the stakes for the crime were too low to make sense. "I don't think she should step down because I'm quite sure she didn't do it," Haynes said. "I know she's innocent. You're talking about a $5,000 car. I know she wouldn't do nothing for no $5,000. Wilmer wouldn't do that. The facts do not add up...

This case would be hilarious for her dumb-criminal incompetence if it wasn't about the former mayor of the city. Her story is that her handyman arrived to trim her bushes, in the evening hours, in March, and decided he wanted a cigarette while he waited for her to arrive home. He allegedly thought it would not only be a good idea if he got into the back seat of his employer's Mercedes to smoke his cigarette but that he should also take a full can of gas with him into the back seat of his employer's car to smoke his cigarette..." and expected hilarity ensued.
Sadly enough, this is the story she produced not upon a spur of the moment facing a fire chief's experienced 3rd degree interviewing skills, but instead after several weeks of preparation. Sigh, the things that always makes small town politics so interesting is how stunningly amateurish small town politicians can be.
They're amateurish here in San Francisco too. You just wouldn't believe how screwed up they really are.

This story reeks of the arrogance of power.
Our wonderful progressive governor, Santa Granholm, continues to tour the state passing out taxpayer cash to the towns and constituents who vote for her.
So thus it was in the blissful town of Saginaw that received its City of Promise presents.
Into the pockets of Jennifers faithful servants disappeared a $315,000 taxpayer grant to study sugar, a $250,000 free grant to innovate elevators and $100,000 in free taxpayer money to contemplate chestnuts.
No mention of political party. We all know what that means.
Heh, what's funny is that Saginaw is so Dem heavy that all the nasty fighting you see is between each other. And I have to give them credit for being fair. Their just as back-stabbing and nasty to each other as they would be to a Republican when a political issue is at stake.
Argh, Their = They're... uh, I mean, BUMP
Only the latest tip of the iceberg. Saginaw County allows a search of public property records via the web. In May 2004 the press found out that the Mayor, who had been scapegoating landlords as being to blame for the condition of the city, was the slumlord to a long neglected property that had just been condemned. She conveniently suffered a health issue when the issue arose at the next city council meeting.

Around that same time it was announced that unlike the rest of communities in Saginaw County, public property records for the city could no longer be searched by owner name.
Not because of the Mayor's rentals you understand but for a completely unrelated reason. Changing the publics access to public records to protect slumlord politicians would be an abuse of power after all.
