Nearly 10 years later, the miracles keep on coming.

It was spring 1997 when the doctor beckoned Amanda's mother into the hallway of the hospital and told her that her daughter would probably never wake up. And if she did wake up, she would be a vegetable.

And here's what Chris Maese told the doctor: "NO! That's not the way it's gonna be." And she jabbed her finger at the doctor for emphasis.

They married a year ago. "I'm totally happy," Amanda says. It's so far from the days when Maese looked down at her daughter lying in a coma, making sucking motions like a sleeping baby.

"I believe Amanda is a miracle," her mom says. A miracle that she insists she never doubted – would never permit herself to doubt. "Instead of crying … I remember singing praise songs in the shower. We become warriors when we have to be.

"When tragedy strikes, you … get down on your knees and you seek all that you can muster up to pull you through. I got in the Bible and I read day and night through the Scriptures and I looked for a sign. Whether to believe the doctors, that Amanda, if she ever did make it, would be nothing more than a vegetable. Or to take that Scripture and hold it close to my heart and believe it without a shadow of a doubt."

My first job as nurse was on a Neurosurgery floor. We had a teenage boy on the floor that was in a coma. We finally talked mom and dad into going to the lake over the weekend, because they really needed a break. I was taking care of their son and he started to wake up and I remember mom screaming over the phone when I told her the news.
By end of the week this kid was laughing at the dirty jokes his uncle was telling him. He did have a long way to go but you can't ever give up.
