BAGHDAD Iraq's prime minister has told Mahdi Army militiamen they must surrender their arms or face an all-out assault by U.S.-backed Iraqi forces, senior Iraqi officials said Wednesday, revealing a pledge Washington wanted to hear as American and Iraqi troops prepared a fresh operation to end the bloody sectarian war gripping Baghdad.
The blunt message was particularly significant given that Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi leader, previously had blocked several U.S. attempts to crack down on the military wing of radical anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, now one of the most powerful players in Iraq.
"Prime Minister al-Maliki has told everyone that there will be no escape from attack. The government has told the Sadrists (the political movement that supports the Mahdi Army), if we want to build a state we have no other choice but to attack armed groups," a senior Shiite legislator and close al-Maliki adviser said.

Good to hear finally. With the additional forces GW is sending into Iraq, Sadr's days are numbered. A new dawn is coming to Iraq. Disarm, surrender or die.
Dems must be screaming right now. Anyone checking out Du?
Hopefully they are all on suicide watch.
it's time to get Ethiopian on their a$$e$
"Anyone checking out Du?"
Not me!
I already took a shower today!
Sounds like the Democrates plan is now backfiring on them!
Well, this is there absolute last chance to build a real functioning country--not a thugaucracy.
If the Iraqi's don't have the good sense to take advantage of this opportunity, then f*%k them! We'll simply buy our oil from the next 'Saddam Hussein' and watch as their cries of pain fall on our deaf ears.
With that said, I hope the Iraqi's choose wisely. They deserve to live in freedom and with dignity. And I hope to count them amongst the functioning human rights based democracies in the near future.
Empty rhetoric. He has had more than enough time to deal with the militias, and they have spiraled out of control. Get rid of Maliki. Allawi could take care of things.
MOOKIE! MOOKIE! LOL
I think the Iraqi governement that wants peace and democracy realizes our democratic majority party would rather see them all slaughtered than succeed. In Iraq they know what us conservatives know, the donk leadership and many of its members are their enemy too.
HOOAH!
I think you may very well have a point there about the dems.
And while I have not approved of several things Bush has done in the past, I am liking his most recent response to the dems.
I think they would be fools to disarm, but they should see that using their arms the way they have been will no longer advance their ball.
I've been reading Julius Caesar's Commentaries. After defeating a Gallic tribe, he would demand they surrender their arms, and provide hostages. If Sadr has any kin, they should be taken into custody.
This could well be the end of one of the most historic mosques in all of Islam if Mookie decides to fight it out there and dares Maliki to risk the wrath of every Shi'ite in the country. That's not a small risk. Were terrorists trying to hijack Catholicism to take up residence in the Castel Sant'Angelo, would we wreck history by blowing it up?
Hell yes we would. Anyone who doesn't believe it can Google up Monte Cassino.
Time to Kick Butt!!
Powerful stuff so look for the RATs to undermine it. Tick tock, GWB, tick tock.
