Mexico's Big War
Investors Business Daily ^ | 1/5/2007 | Sum Gai

The invasion and rout of an Arizona National Guard station by Mexican traffickers Wednesday signals that Mexico's fierce new war against smugglers is spilling over into the U.S. We should have been prepared.

Not since the days of Pancho Villa has the U.S. fallen to armed Mexican invaders stealing in and making raids.

[...]

Al-Qaida terrorists have been eyeing our unfortified border with interest for some time. They must be looking at this rout of the U.S. military by mere lowlife Mexican dopers with pure fascination.

I'm not sure AQ would try it, because they never do anything that daring. But it does show that Mexico, under its new government, is finally getting serious on crime.

I think this is the opening shot. If we can coordinate with Mexico (that is, shoot to kill on either side of the border), we may have some of these creeps under control. They've destroyed many Mexican border towns, ruined the tourism industry for large parts of Mexico, and driven honest Mexicans out of their homes. I don't think the Guard was prepared for this, but I bet they will be in the future.

I suspect the Raiders were Mexican Army hired by dope dealers.

I read that there were 2000 killings related to drugs in Mexico in 2006. Why doesn't the Drive by Media report this 24 hours a day as they do with American deaths in Iraq...

What is it that I've been hearing that the Mexican government has been supplying GPS systems to illegals?

Who was responsible for setting the rules of engagement, which prevented the National Guard from shooting no matter what the provocation?

Was this a federal or a state decision? Or a low level decision on the local commander's part?

Did they have any ammo with them?

Inquiring minds want to know. This could have been a massive disaster if the drug smugglers had really gone after them. In any case, it is acutely embarrassing, and invites worse trouble in the future.

Everybody concentrates on the border with Mexico. That's fine, we certainly have to staunch the flow of illegals using that avenue. But the Canadian border is just as big of a problem. Canada is/was a favorite place for ME people eager to take advantage of Canada's very liberal refugee policies. It was rhe entry point for the jihadi who wanted to pull off a Millenium bombing.
This mustn't be overlooked or forgotten.

Here's a thought...

If Mexico is having, what looks to me, a civil war, then why don't we just round up all the illegals, put them in a refugee camps and then get the UN to pay for them.

Who's in control of the AZ guard. State or Fed?

I'm not worried about that. When they get picked up, under the new Mexican government, they get sent back and accepted. And this government obviously wants to make Mexico a place where Mexicans want to live.

I used to go to Mexico, but over the years it has become such a left-wing, crime-ridden hell-hole that I stopped going. I hoped Fox was going to change it, but he was a flake, something he revealed early on in his presidency. It looks to me like Calderon might be the real thing, though. Pray he doesn't get assassinated, because I'm sure every druggie and Marxist in Mexico would love to do so.

Fortunately the Canadians don't actively support smuggling and they actually cooperate with us.

Calderon might be the real thing

Real nice of him to hand out GPS devices so his citizens don't get lost sneaking across the border. Real thing indeed.

impossible "rules of engagement"

Whether they were set by him, Rummy, or whoever..I can say one thing with reasonable certainty:

I don't believe anyone EVER won a war with "political correctness"!

I've said all along that the only way to fight a war is to FIGHT a war. Stormin' Norman said the purpose of war is to kill people and break things....that's just-what-it-is.

If we had fought World War II the way we did in Vietnam and the way we're doing now in Iraq and the way we're in the process of doing along our southern border we'd be something other than the United States now, that's for sure!

Probably just dope dealers - it sounds like a blunder rather than a plan. I think at this point they probably realize that they blew it big.

Calderon is going to improve army and police pay, btw, to make them less susceptible to bribery. This is a good idea. I translate things for various agencies, and when you have a radically underpaid police force or military, you have abundant opportunities for corruption. Mexico used to give its money to the privileged children of the Socialist upper classes (stipends for college that resulted in 45 yr old college students, for example) but I think Calderon really wants to make changes there.

Wow! Whole systems?

Satellites AND the 'user' segment equipment (the hand-held positioning receivers)?

Man, that has got to be expensive ...

How do the illegals 'launch' (or insert) the satellites into the GPS constellation (of satellites) though?

Yeah, like the Canadians who walked off the border about a year ago because they said we were putting them in a dangerous position by asking them to stop certain people?

The only terrorists who are known to have gotten here by crossing a land border came in through Canada. And the only ones among them who were caught were caught by AMERICAN border guards on the other side, and not by the useless Canadians.

"I've said all along that the only way to fight a war is to FIGHT a war. "

Napoleon knew the way. He said, "If you're going to take Vienna, take Vienna." IOW, if you dally or pull your punches, you can lose the whole thing.
