WASHINGTON: On the precipice of regaining power after 12 years Thursday, Democrats in the U.S. House said they would move immediately to try to sever ties between lawmakers and lobbyists who figured into scandals that helped Democrats win control of Congress.

House Democrats also vowed quick action to raise the minimum wage, liberalize stem cell research, reduce prescription drug prices and recover back royalties for oil drilling they say have been unfairly avoided by energy companies since 1998.

With the new Congress convening at noon on Thursday to elect Representative Nancy Pelosi of California as the nation's first female Speaker of the House, early signs of bipartisan cooperation had all but evaporated, with House Democrats saying they would not allow Republicans the chance to amend any of the first half-dozen bills to be brought to a vote.

"We view the first 100 hours as essentially a mandate from the American people," the incoming Democratic House majority leader, Steny Hoyer of Maryland, told reporters, explaining the decision to safeguard those measures from Republican attack.

I'm sorry I am going to have to adjust my thinking now that Democrats are in control....

Guns kill people, the person with the gun is a victim also....
Politicians don't have lapses in ethics, they are the victims of lobbyists....

Why hasn't the Bush Adminstraion called tax cuts "Investing in America?"

The government wants to raise revenues (which the tax cuts have done). So, it "invests" in American through tax cuts.

Are the Democrats against investing in American businesses and workers?

Never heard it in a campaign.
