"That's why they are so eager to ban .50-caliber rifles first. It's kind of difficult to maintain a 1000-yard perimeter around your limousine."

I don't think thats it because most of them know how hard it is to hit a target 1000 yds away. I think their motivation is incrementalism. First its the .50, next its the rifles in the .4x range. Eventually they'll get to the single shot shotgun.

The local store has boxes of .22LR (525 rds) for $10. Another store runs regular specials on that same ammo at $8. It's loose packed, plated and feeds perfectly in a Ruger MKII. My wife picks up a box almost every time we shop there. A stash of 17M2 is good too. Rifles in .223, .308 and 30-06. Pistols in 9mm, 45Auto. That covers the stock military calibers. Well regulated means coming to the party with a common caliber that shoots the standard coin of the realm. A rifle in 7.62x39 probably wouldn't hurt either. Lots of ammo around in that caliber.

Good choices all, Myrddin. The prospective Survivor should have guns and ammo in all of the recommended calibers for their own personal stash. I was thinking more along the lines of supplying those fortunate enough to still have Grampa's single shot .22 around who need it to cap a winter squirell or deal with a robber (or worse).

Ok, so let's say guns are banned .... what happens then? Does "Prohibition" come to mind? What happened during the 20's when liquor was outlawed?? I think that millions of guns will go underground. IMHO ....

Everyone who is eligible (and doesn't already own one) should buy a gun as soon as possible and learn how to use it.

I have been following your excellent advice for about 46 years now.

The .22LR has long been my favorite tool for putting rabbit on my dinner table. I have rifles big enough to take down a bear and small enough to pick off field mice. Having a stash of .22LR around is definitely a reasonable resource to keep food on the table. I'm not averse to trading my hunting proceeds for other necessities.

You are correct. I would also suggest that you have a least two firearms in each caliber that you have. If one weapon breaks you have a backup. You local gunsmith will be out of business.

You bet gun control is at the top but another more achievable goal is the "Fairness Doctrine" which they will start wedging in, designed to cut off any conservative point of view out there in radio land. It's coming.

I used to be a die-hard short wave listener, is it still a viable news source? Anyone?

Just how do these elect officials plan on disarming by force between 800,000 and 8,000,000 armed Americans who will all have very bad attitudes?

They will continue exactly what they're doing now. Make exercising your 2nd Amendment rights enough of a hassle to discourage the next generation from taking it up in the first place. The gun culture will die of old age without firing a shot.

50 million public school kids are being taught that guns are evil and even drawing a picture of one will get the school locked down and you arrested. In the sprawl where an increasing number of people live, it's an hour's drive just to get somewhere you are permitted to shoot. These are not accidents.

My son and I are devoted believers in gun control. Three inch groups at 100 yards with open sights. That is good gun control.

Only two? It's been a long time since I only had two for each caliber. My wife wouldn't permit it. She always insists on one or two for herself as well. I have one of every BoreSnake model on the market. My wife does the dishes...I clean the other stuff. She does help reload the 38SPL because she consumes them like most people eat popcorn at a movie.

How many "Blue Dog" Democrats did the NRA support in the past election cycle?

I am putting off buying a new truck so I can spend about $25k over the next two years on arms and ammunition. I see which way this thing is going, and I won't be caught short.

Don't forget the other asinine proposals stealthily designed to limit our 2A rights such as "smart guns" and ammo that has serial numbers embedded on each bullet. Even though reliable technology does not exist they will try to implement these laws as an end run around the second amendment. So, they technically will not have banned guns, you just won't be able to buy any that meet the new govt requirements.

Also, some have proposed 1000% taxes on ammo. I guess they want to make it cost prohibitive to shoot. So stock up on as much ammo as you can while you can.

I should have also added that it wouldn't hurt to buy a good reloading press with dies for all the calibers you own - preferably Dillon Precision equipment. Although the anti-gunners have yet to attack from this angle I wouldn't put it outside the realm of possibility.

Plus, reloading is cheaper and you can produce higher quality ammo than you can but from a store.
