The Denver Post ^ | January 1, 2007 | Bill Williamson

Posted on 01/01/2007 4:34:43 AM PST by goarmy

Broncos right cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed this morning. After leaving a nightclub in a limousine, Williams was shot and killed near 11th and Grant in Denver. The team confirmed the death of Williams. A female passenger also was shot, according to a source familiar with Williams.

Williams was 24.

"I learned from the Denver Police Deprtment that this incident has occured," Williams' agent, Jeff Griffin said early Monday morning. "No other details have been released. I sincerely offer my condolences and feelings to his family."

Williams was the Broncos' starting right cornerback and played his final game for the team in a 26-23 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers that eliminated Denver from the playoffs on New Year's Eve.

Speer makes a bit of a difference--but it's still not the best of neighborhoods, although it's not nearly as bad as say, East Colfax.

Needless to say, now that I'm older/wiser I don't know if I'd want to be hanging around LoDo (lower downtown) if I could help it.

My mother used to live on 12th and Pearl--some parts of Capitol Hill area having a bit of a renaissance, some parts Sadr City slum.

Then again, I haven't lived there in almost 15 years, and haven't visited there since I last saw my mother last year (I can say that now, can't I, since it was in 2006?)

I'm shocked, too. Shocked that it doesn't happen more often.

I don't think basketball is in worse shape than football. It may even be in better shape, especially when you look at the vast sport beyond the NBA. It just doesn't strike the publics attention much because in football you have the distant figures covered in body armor obscuring some of the personality of the sport. Also we don't have foreign countries highlighting the decline of US football by beating us because most of the rest of the world doesn't really care about US football.

As far as thuggery and "robust" living, it's always been a part of many ballplayers' lives, be it football, basketball, baseball, etc. Whites, blacks, it doesn't matter. A lot of ballplayers have always lived dangerously. It's just that society today as a whole is more dangerous, decedent and prey to harmful pop culture fads.

Probably more has to do with this poor guy forgot to leave the trash talk at the game. Cornerbacks are about the most brash young male men on earth. Talking smack to a fellow athlete isn't the same as talking smack to someone who is already invariably way resentful of your success.

Exactly why, even back in my drinking days, I never go out on New Year's Eve....amateur night.

This is so wrong. A person should be able to go out on New Year's eve in any city downtown and not be shot/assaulted or harmed. Mr. Williams was in a vehicle and minding his own business. That's just what all of us should be able to do in a civil society.

Sad. One report said he had two kids. If true, there might be a jealous wife or ex.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the team losing?

He played well, and had outperformed nearly every other 2nd year CB in the league this year. It was a combination of Jay Culter's concussion and the remarkable 49ers that did Denver in. This is a team which beat Seattle twice and has been close in every loss since Week 5 as Alex Smith has improved and Gore has exploded.

Quote from the Denver Post..

"In December, Williams spoke of his desire to return to his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, this offseason to talk to kids about staying out of gangs."

Sounds like gangs didn't cotton much to his idea.

dittos to all you said about going out.

just choose your places a little more carefully. avoid violence prone (mostly Black & Hispanic) night spots.

BTW, this had nothing to do with the game.

This is a shame.

On Sunday against the 49ers, he had a sack, a forced fumble, and led the team with seven sacks.

You mean seven tackles. He was indeed an exceptional young man. Just revolting the culture that young black men feel they need to be a part of to be "hip".

Wow a whole bunch of articles about Tank Johnson, one about a Seahawk, one wrapper article that mentions police at a nightclub then goes on to discuss the NFL playoffs, and a year old article about the Panthers cheerleaders. Yup, sure is bad to be an NFL guy at a nightclub.

Here's the reality of it, at the beginning of the year there were almost 1700 people playing for the NFL (53 man roster times 32 teams), and that's not counting coaches, practice squad members, and cheerleaders. As the number climbs the chance of something bad happening to one or more of them climbs as a sheer function of the group size. It's unfortunate but it really isn't a statement about the league, and trying to make it a statement on the league, especially when the story in question involves a death, is pathetic and sick.

Lee Harvey Oswald was not a 'very powerful person.'
