I always loved that '599'.
I could be coming into some at less than a 1 with the signal drifting in and out and still I would get 'UR 599'.
Funny. But still cool.

You didn't get the memo. It's all a part of the nefarious Alan Parsons Project.

Trust the Washington Post to write about "news" that everyone in and on the fringes of the trade has known about for thirty freaking years.
But then again, to the Post, if it wasn't in yesterday's New York Times, or made up on the spot by Bob Woodward, it isn't news.

My dad was a HAM radio operator, and he used to let me into the shack when I was a boy in the '70s to listen to this sort of thing...and other stuff. We listened to a lot of Soviet surface fleet and air defence chatter. I vividly recall the eerie rachet sound of the "Russian Woodpecker" ICBM radar.
I think I actually miss the Cold War some days.

I used to hear this stuff back when I was a kid and had my Dad's Hallicrafter shortwave radio. Even though the transmissions made no sense to me, it was still pretty cool because I knew it had something to do with all that cloak and dagger stuff.
