They had a 540 year run. Is that longer than the Roman Empire?

Not really. The Roman Empire was, what, about 700 years? Then you toss in another thousand thanks to Byzantium, maybe a few hundred more if you believe the Holy Roman Empire was actually a continuance of the classical Roman Empire, and you've got probably the longest-surviving empire in human history... China excepted.
