WASHINGTON -- The Selective Service System is planning a comprehensive test of the military draft machinery, which hasn't been run since 1998.
The agency is not gearing up for a draft, an agency official said Thursday. The test itself would not likely occur until 2009.
Meanwhile, the secretary for Veterans Affairs said that "society would benefit" if the U.S. were to bring back the draft and that it shouldn't have any loopholes for anyone who is called to serve. VA Secretary Jim Nicholson later issued a statement saying he does not support reinstituting a draft.

We DON'T need a draft. We need higher paid, quality people and more of them. Our present membership are wonderful and we need more like them.
I agree! I served from 1966 to 1970 and saw what kind of crap the military was forced to put up with and it was the main reason I did my 4 and got out!
You are right. I served from '70-73. After we came back from Nam we were involved in some sort of test program to train the new all-voluntary Army. It was hell dealing with some of the draftees in combat situations. I emphasize *some* because the great majority were great . I wouldn't want to go up against our troops today for all the money in the world. They would have hicked our asses big time.
I did 1965 to 1992 and experienced the difference. Give me volunteers please.

I do support the reinstitution of compulsory military service - - - - without exemptions. Those physically unable to serve in the military should be conscripted into some form of national service that fits within their capabilities. I have spoken to civic and professional clubs and associations on the subject. Knowing it is a fairly debatable subject and knowing the litany of objections and reasons against such a proposal, it isn't necessary to educate me on the unwisdom of my position. But, have at it if you choose.
All I will ask you is what would the military do with all the chicken-shit soldiers like JFnK.
I thought I responded to this, but apparently not. If you begin with an invalid and universally unacceptable premise, all that follows is equally defective. In every group of mass conscripts there will be a discrete number who are unacceptable. Those in command are responsible for exercising it well and being leaders who handle the problems and create men of boys.
