Navy rejects San Francisco for warship commissioning ceremony

By: Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Navy has rejected plans to commission its newest and most powerful warship in San Francisco because of concerns that the city doesn't support the military.

Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter vetoed plans this week for a commissioning ceremony for the Makin Island in San Francisco, said retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt, chairman of the citizens' commissioning committee.

Instead, San Diego will host the ceremony in which the crew formally takes charge of the ship, Myatt said.

Navy leaders were concerned about San Francisco's refusal to offer a homeport for the retired battleship Iowa, which would be turned into a museum, as well as the school board's decision to abolish junior ROTC training in city high schools, Myatt said.

Some city politicians also have publicly criticized the Pentagon. In one instance, Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval said national defense should be left to "the cops and the Coast Guard."

Myatt said the Navy had mistaken the views of some political leaders for the views of the majority of Bay Area citizens.

The last ship to be commissioned in San Francisco was the frigate McCampbell in the summer of 2002.

Apparently, the USS McCampbell (DDG-85) is an Arleigh Burke Class AEGIS Destroyer and NOT a frigate, as the numbskulls at AP reported. I think such journalistic mistakes occur because very few MSM reporters have any clue about the U.S. Armed Forces.

It would have also been helpful if the AP (or the North County Times) had published the name of the new Navy warship that is to be commissioned. Hello?

Of course it is even more outrageous that San Francisco has become so antagonistic towards the U.S. Armed Forces.

SF leftists in the city government stopped a U.S. battleship from moving to SF as a museum and, more recently, the SF school board voted to abolish JROTC in the high schools.

The politicians in SF are despicable. Just as despicable are the voters who keep such people operating the levers of power in the local city government. San Francisco is becoming a city that operates outside of American norms. I am sure that Nancy Pelosi is proud.

If it were a frigate, it's hull number would begin with FF and not DDG.

That said, ESAD, SF. Reap the whirlwind.

In the past year San Francisco has (1) refused to accept the USS Iowa as a floating museum and (2) banned JROTC in its high schools. To hell with this Sodom-and-Gemorrah By-the-Bay!

.....To hell with this Sodom-and-Gemorrah By-the-Bay!.....

There is nothing wrong with SF that couldn't be solved by a 9.0 quake.

San Fran wants the money the military contributes to their economy, but they want the military itself to be out of sight, out of mind. Good to see the Navy getting vocal about it.

The story calls the ship the "Makin Island". They don't refer to it properly as USS Makin Island, but still , it is there.

Speaking of 'there' I was at the Navy Pier in SF in 1986 when the USS Missouri came to call and the protestors (including Dianne Feinstein) were at the fence screaming their typical crap..."Hey hey, ho ho,...blah, blah, blah".

I'm glad the ship won't be in SF. I'd rather see her scrapped than turned into a liberal icon as it absolutely would be in SF.

Couldn't happen to a more deserving city of wackos. One could consider it a haven for Al Qaida. People in SF haven't met an enemy of the United States that they didn't love and feel sorry for.
