Zawahiri tape coming ~sigh~ I guess we missed.
Well, we'll have to wait and see if the silence is truly broken by Zawahiri.
New Al Qaeda Message Expected As Terror Anxieties Already High in Europe
With European law enforcement officials warning of an imminent holiday terror attack, Web sites associated with al Qaeda announced today that the group's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, is about to issue a new statement entitled "the truths about the clash between Islam and atheism."
According to the Associated Press, John Reid, Britain's top law enforcement official, said Sunday that it was "highly likely" that terrorists would attempt to mount an attack over the holiday period, when the number of travelers swells. He gave no other details.
The head of Britain's domestic spy agency MI5, Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, has said her agents are tracking almost 30 terrorist plots involving 1,600 suspects, and that at least five major terror plots had been thwarted since the July 2005 transit bomb attacks in London.
Zawahiri's statement is being advertised by al Sahab, the production wing for al Qaeda. Typically, the statements are released a few days after being advertised by al Sahab, which would put this message out right before the Christmas holiday weekend begins.
Al Zawahiri's last 11 statements were video releases. The last we heard from al Zawahiri was about two months ago at the end of September. In that statement, Zawahiri pontificated about the new Pope and the crisis in Darfur.

FBI agents in cooperation with Albanian authorities are investigating eventual smuggling of radioactive material deemed to have been planned for using in terrorist attacks across Europe.
Citing sources from the Prosecution Office, the Albanian media reported there are grounds for suspicions that 170 kilograms of radioactive material was brought in the country.
According to the same sources, the illegal shipment was planned to serve for the purposes of carrying out terrorist attacks in Western Europe.
FBI agents have taken in five suspects, including three Albanian police officers and two residents of Skadar. After questioning, they have been released.

"Seven die in coca ambush in Peru"
By Dan Collyns
BBC News, Lima
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Peru permits a certain amount of coca to be grown for traditional uses
Suspected rebels in Peru have killed seven men, including five policemen, in an ambush in the country's coca-growing interior.
The police convoy was attacked during a crackdown on illegal coca-growing in the second major ambush in a year.
The interior ministry has not blamed any group for the attack but remnants of the Shining Path guerrilla movement are known to operate in the region.
More than 20 police have been killed in ambushes in the last year.
The rebel group, which led one of Latin America's bloodiest insurgencies in the 1980s and 1990s, has claimed responsibility for similar attacks."

Weapons Caches Found in Iraq; 27 Suspected Insurgents Detained
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Dec. 18, 2006 Iraqi soldiers with coalition forces discovered weapons caches and detained 27 suspects around Iraq over the past two days.
Soldiers with the 5th Battalion (Stryker), 20th Infantry, raided a compound yesterday in eastern Baghdad and found a weapons cache containing six AK-47 rifles with 13 magazines, two homemade zip guns, one rocket-propelled-grenade launcher with a bag of grenades, three improvised explosive devices, one 9 mm submachine gun with three magazines, one saber, one brass knuckle and knife combination, and one .22-caliber single-shot rifle. The raid also uncovered a computer and two gas masks with filters.
Elsewhere in Iraq yesterday, paratroopers from Company A, 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division found another weapons cache while searching a house near Jurf as Sakhr.
The cache consisted of three rifles, one scope, one sword, one pistol, six magazines of 7.62 mm ammunition, assorted military uniforms, one American chemical protective suit, a firing mechanism for an air-defense weapon, and a large amount of currency. The paratroops also detained 18 suspected insurgents during yesterdays raid. The detainees and confiscated weapons were taken to the unit's base camp, and the suspects are being held for further questioning.
In Tikrit yesterday, Iraqi police forces with coalition advisors captured a suspected weapons smuggler who was allegedly supplying weapons and improvised explosive devices used in insurgent attacks against Iraqi civilians and security forces. The weapons smuggler is an experienced IED-maker and provides IEDs, small arms, and heavy weapons to insurgent groups conducting attacks in the Tikrit area, military officials said. Iraqi forces confiscated three assault rifles and a pistol during the operation. Minimal damage occurred during the operation, and no Iraqi civilian or military or coalition casualties were reported.
Three more insurgents were captured elsewhere in Iraq yesterday when the 1st Iraqi Army Division with coalition advisors raided a compound in Fallujah. Combined forces captured a suspected forger who allegedly produces forged documents and false identifications for insurgents operating from Ramadi to Baghdad. Iraqi forces also detained two other suspected insurgents who military officials say are part of an improvised explosive device cell operating in the area.
The troops confiscated equipment and material used to produce false identification and documents during the operation.
A day earlier in Iraq, soldiers with the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment detained five suspected terrorists in two separate incidents and found weapons and other items during routine traffic checks in eastern Bagdad. During one of the traffic stops, the unit found three 9 mm pistols, three cell phones and a black ski mask. The soldiers detained three individuals during this incident. In the second incident, soldiers discovered a video camera and a recorder and detained two more suspects. All five suspects are being held for questioning.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20061216-07
Dec. 16, 2006
Insurgents killed attempting to emplace IEDs
Multi-National Corps West PAO
FALLUJAH, Iraq -- An estimated four insurgents were killed by aviation fires after precision munitions were employed to destroy a bongo truck used to transport improvised explosive devices Friday south of Fallujah.
Marines assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 observed insurgents excavating IED-making material from the side of a road and loading it into a bongo truck. The truck then proceeded to another location where the insurgents began emplacing the IEDs.
The Marines established positive identification of the insurgents, ensured no civilians were in the vicinity and destroyed the truck with precision munitions. The insurgents were killed by direct fire.
Approximately 20 minutes later, secondary explosions from the vehicle were observed.
There were no reports of civilian casualties and no Coalition casualties.

"The Saudi Hate Campaign Backfires"
By James Lewis
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "We don't really know why Ambarassador Sultan Al-Turki shockingly resigned in Washington last week and rushed back to Riyadh. But he was head of Saudi intelligence for years, and he may know something about Iran's plans during the Hajj. Iranian Shiites have a history of staging riots and demonstrations during the pilgrimage, going back to the Khomeini years."

ACLU continues to define torture down
and down
and down
Stop The ACLU ^ | 18-Dec-06 | Glib Fortuna
Posted on 12/18/2006 2:57:48 PM PST by Jay777
I will concede that maybe, just maybe, we should look at techniques like "waterboarding" and consider if they are necessary tools when interrogating terrorists who may hold the key to sparing the lives of dozens...hundreds...thousands...hundreds of thousands...of innocent citizens. Personally, drowning SIMULATIONS do not rise to the level of torture any more than forcing a kid who really sucks at bobbing for apples to play anyway in order to "fit in." I think I've probably been guilty of "waterboarding" my younger brother at the beach a couple of times along with "simulating" quite a few wedgies and spiking his shampoo with some chili oil...OK, ACLU, here I am, cuff me.
Anyway, the ACLU is at it again: ACLU Calls on Gates to Investigate Sensory Deprivation Techniques Used Against Prisoners in U.S. Custody
As Robert Gates was sworn in today, the American Civil Liberties Union called on the new Secretary of Defense to launch an investigation into cruel and inhuman methods (Glib Note: You have got to be sh***ing me) used on prisoners in U.S. custody. Among the methods being denounced by the ACLU are sensory deprivation techniques recently shown to be used on Jose Padilla, including blacked-out goggles and headphones that block sound.
Now they can't even be frikkin' BLINDFOLDED? I guess everyone who's ever been to the Bat Cave should join the suit...I'm sure there would be no standing issue as Batman, with his direct line to Commissioner Gordon, could certainly be considered a government-supported operative. B.A. Baracus was forcibly tranquilized every time the team needed to fly...ACLU?

"Nakagawa calls U.S. A-bombing of Japan 'an inexcusable crime'"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Shoichi Nakagawa, a senior Liberal Democratic Party politician has called the U.S. atomic bombing of Japan in 1945 a crime and inexcusable.
Nakagawa, policy chief of the ruling LDP, made the comments after visiting the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, a ruling party official said.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, would only paraphrase Nakagawa's comments late Sunday, but Kyodo News agency and a newspaper quoted him directly.
"The U.S. decision to drop such a thing was truly unforgivable on humanitarian grounds," the reports quoted Nakagawa as saying. "Dropping an atomic bomb is a crime.""
This is rather weak. There is nothing to stop him from returning under 'routine' reasons not necessitating his resignation.
ON THE NET:
New York, Dec 18: Media reports have claimed that Osama bin Laden's terror outfit Al Qaeda is currently training a 12-member team of Westerners in Pakistan to carry out a special mission.
The 12-member squad is likely to help plotting attacks on return to their home countries, the report said. The team includes nine British citizens, two Norwegian Muslims and an Australian.
The report was published quoting Taliban's Chief Qaeda liaison for Ghazni province in Afghanistan, Omar Farooqi. The report claimed that some Taliban commanders told it of seeing the "English brothers" in person during the training.
Farooqi said he spent roughly five weeks last year helping indoctrinate and train A-class foreign recruits near Afghanistan border in tribal Waziristan. Their mission will be to act as, underground organisers and operatives for Al Qaeda in their home countries, he said. The yearlong training course of the foreigners is just about finished, he added.
