I figured that out ;)

Varela apparently took over his [the editor's] office and trashed it, including a cartoon of the executive editor that Varela had drawn.

The beauty of "gun-free" zones is all you have to do is claim to have a gun and you can take control.

My husband says the man is claiming that he is now in charge?

Hmm, wonder what kind of articles he would publish?

Unless someone claims to have a .50 Browning machine gun, and he/she will dispute your taking control.

I don't know, I've fired one of those babies (just once) and I recall them being fairly large and not easy to conceal. No one has ever asked me, "Is that a Browning .50 cal in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?" LOL!
